British Regimental Histories, 1939-1945

Had it been designed expressly to deceive enemy intelligence, the organization and nomenclature of the British regimental system in the Second World War could scarcely have been more convoluted and confusing. The same could almost be said for the shelves of regimental histories produced in the UK in the years following the war. Where American authors and publishers, for example, mostly focused on divisional histories, British authors and publishers more commonly produced unit histories of regiments, or—in many cases—individual battalions.
While complete comprehension of the regimental system continues to defy our grasp, we have managed to sort through enough of the literature to produce a fairly useful taxonomy and bibliography of regimental histories covering the war years. This list is by no means complete (it excludes, for example, pamphlets and brochures and similar ephemera included in Arthur White's volume), but it does include key works for each British regiment serving for at least some duration as infantry, armor, recon, etc (but excluding signals, engineers, most artillery, and so on). Each unit is listed alphabetically, including alternative names which are cross-referenced to the main listing for the unit. "Mis-named" battalions are shown under the appropriate regiment (since otherwise only the expert would know, for example, to which regiment the Hallamshire battalion belonged) but otherwise numbered battalions of the regiment are ignored.
This approach should help readers and researchers locate the most useful histories for each formation. Here are some other Internet resources:

Our own evolving compilation of British unit histories, sorted by author

Land Forces of Britain, the Empire, and Commonwealth

Graham Palmer's extensive inventory of regimental histories

And here are some general works with information about British regiments:

Bellis, Malcolm. Regiments of the British Army, 1939-1945 (Armour & Infantry). London: Military Press International, 1994

Joslen, LtCol H. F. Orders of Battle (two volumes). London: HMSO, 1960

White, Arthur S. Bibliography of Regimental Histories of the British Army. Dallington, UK: Naval & Military Press, 1992

As always, we welcome corrections, clarifications, and additions.
