American WWII Divisional Histories
Beginning shortly after the war ended and continuing for quite a few years, most American divisions, or someone connected to the division, produced some kind of unit history. These ranged from brief mementos to comprehensive, blow-by-blow accounts to photo albums with a dearth of text. Many divisions published more than one tome, and of course over the years other authors tackled the subjects, meaning that there were eventually hundreds of books that could be called, more or less, divisional histories. From the perspective of quality of content, these varied considerably in value. Most of the original volumes published in the 1940s and 1950s are hard to find and, whatever their value as historical sources, they tend to be quite pricey.
Fortunately, the Battery Press of Nashville has been reprinting most of these books in high quality editions, and these excellent reprints are generally available and at much more reasonable prices.
Even though so many divisional histories are available, it can be difficult to identify books covering specific divisions, especially since the titles are not always entirely helpful in this respect. There are several sources of information for all these histories that make it easier to find the books covering each division.
James T. Controvich has produced a series of printed bibliographies that comprise probably the most comprehensive source available, although not always quite so convenient in this wired era. In addition, the Battery Press website lists all its divisional reprints, but only the ones that are currently available (since these tend to come and go out of print). Our own Stone & Stone pages offer a lengthy compilation of American unit histories displayed alphabetically by author's last name.
Finally, this page offers a survey of the most important histories for all the American divisions in World War II, listed sequentially by the division's number. Each title listed here also includes a link to a page where, depending on the item, visitors can find more information about the book, links to other editions of the book, links to reviews, links to sources for purchasing the book, and feedback about the book provided by visitors to our website.
