I knew him after he got in that little saloon there up on the road from Comptche to Mendocino. I never knew him before that. But I had heard of him long before that. Yeah, old Portugee Frank. He and Nigger Nat. Nigger Nat used to say that he and Portugee Frank were the two first white men to come to the County. (LAUGHS) Nigger Nat was Black. He was pretty Black. I knew him too.
