Text by Jeff Cox/Photos by Jerry Pavia

This beautiful book won the prestigious Garden Writers Association of America Annual Award for Book Writing. It's been published in English, French, and Japanese. The writing is of such quality that Cox has been referred to by the French as a poet. The hundreds of gorgeous photos are equally poetic.

The book is in six parts, one for each of the five physical senses and one for the sixth sense that connects the gardener to the creation as a whole. Each of the five parts both shows and lists plants that appeal to one or more of the senses of sight, touch, smell, hearing, or tasting, or stimulate that sixth sense of awareness beyond the purely physical realm.

A few quotes from the book:

"The garden soothes and delights us, and we find healing care there, too. The garden is a love song, a duet between a human being and mother nature."

"We can classify flowers by how far they project their scent. Delicate rose fragrances may not be perceptible until the nose is perched, beelike, on the tuft of yellow stamens in the center of the flower. But even a small Daphne odora will send its scent sailing on the wind, and you can pick it up all the way across the yard."

"The sweet fruit that hangs so delectably from summer brambles, bushes, and trees is not just for us. The plants have a secret purpose all their own as the fallen fruit fertilizes and enlivens the soil in which they grow."
