Martin Chambi Black and White photos from early this century, taken in Cusco-Peru. (Scroll down the home page to get to the photos). It's striking how little some things have changed. The photographer was a native Peruvian.

These are some websites that I (Caroline) find interesting (I tried my best to categorise them but gave up in despair).
Aisling Magazine This magazine, excerpts of which can be read online, was founded by Tess Harper and Dara Molloy, who live on Inis Mor (one of the Aran Islands off the west coast of Ireland). They envision a juster, more spiritual world and try to live outside the consumer culture. The magazine contains an eclectic mixture of articles on topics such as Celtic spirituality, world economics, health and energy policy.
The Boat Landing Guesthouse and Restaurant, Luang Nam Tha, Lao PDR The Lao owners of this guesthouse, Sompawn and Patsanee Khantisouk, have designed it in an environmentally sensitive way. The setting is idyllic. I've heard that since we went to Laos in early 2001, more of these "eco-lodges" have been built. They're well worth supporting (particularly the ones that are locally owned). It's a good idea to book in advance...
The Noam Chomsky Archive and Chomsky Archive; links to interviews with, and political commentaries of, Noam Chomsky, who despite the darkness of much of what he writes about, always manages to inspire me and give me hope - partly because he himself is optimistic, and partly because his writing is so lucid and scholarly.
Educacion Para Todos Intensive Spanish Language School I studied Spanish at this great language school in Quetzaltenango, Guatemala, in 1998, and judging from its website, it's still going strong. The teachers are paid a living wage (unlike at some other schools) and profits also go to support ecological and social projects in the area.
Feasta; The Foundation for the Economics of Sustainability This is an Irish organisation, co-founded by economist Richard Douthwaite (author of "the Growth Illusion"). According to the website, "FEASTA people are interested in identifying the reasons why the present economic system is so grotesquely unsustainable and the ways in which it has to be changed to remedy that. We are interested in envisioning how a sustainable economy and society might look". The website contains many interesting essays and links.
Food First; the Institute for Food and Development Policy Founded by the author of "Diet for a Small Planet", this organisation seeks to establish access to food as a basic human right. It includes an interesting interview with the co-director, Anuradha Mittal, about the true causes of world hunger.
KPFA listener-sponsored radio. This radio station, founded by pacifists and broadcast out of Berkeley, California, has as its missions "promotion of cultural diversity and pluralistic community expression; to contribute to a lasting understanding between individuals of all nations, races, creeds, and colors; and to promote freedom of the press and serve as a forum for various viewpoints". Two of its most interesting programs are Democracy Now (actually broadcast from New York), and Flashpoints.
Naturesongs This wonderful website is an archive of natural sounds, including birdsongs and animal sounds.
New Road Map Foundation Set up by the people who wrote "Your Money or Your Life", this website is well-organised with essays about economics, simple living, and world social issues (Vicki Robin's essay about India is well worth a look).
Northern Ireland Elections Website My brother Nicholas Whyte has been maintaining a comprehensive website dealing with Northern Ireland elections for the past six years or so. He is also interested in science fiction and has written reviews of many science fiction books, as well as pieces about history of science, and his website contains some other bits and pieces too.
Arundhati Roy website This site has links to most of Arundhati Roy's political essays, as well as interviews with her. She writes compellingly about social and economic issues in her native India and throughout the world.
Sustainable Living Institute (Culture Change magazine)
The magazine used to be the "Auto Free Times". The website "demonstrates alternatives to sprawl and petroleum dependence while fighting unwise development such as new road construction."
