Company History
Santa Rosa Fire Equipment Service rose from brimstone and ash January 1, 1954 the dream of Donald Harris. Mr. Harris worked the company selling and servicing soda-acid and carbon dioxide fire extinguishers from the back of a sedan delivery. He met his first employee, Rod Williams while filling the car with gas from a service station. Rod joined the firm in 1955 until his passing in 1993, known as the "old man" Rod trained nearly every fire extinguisher service person that ever was.
Mr. Harris hired a couple of other employees over the years including Dave Ricci, one of the two current owners, in 1963. A young fireman with the Roseland Fire District, Dave worked his off shift days for Mr. Harris until he was called to serve his country in the Viet Nam War. After his return, Dave continued to work for Santa Rosa Fire Equipment Service, while raising his family.
In June 1972, Mr. Harris hired another young wipper-snapper, Mike Reeser to work as summer help for Rod during the contract with the Bohemian Grove camp. Mike learned the trade hauling extinguishers up and down the hills outside Monte Rio. Mike returned to school in September that year and returned to work during his senior year under a work experience program. Mike began full time work in March 1973.
Santa Rosa Fire Equipment Service grew over the years selling fire extinguishers, fire alarm systems and fire department equipment. By 1978 the company boasted five vehicles and a total employment of eight. Mr. Harris decided that it was time to begin turning over the reins to the next generation of Santa Rosa Fire Equipment owners. The business Mr. Harris had grown from a small sapling was incorporated in 1978 to become Santa Rosa Fire Equipment Service, Inc. The first board of directors consisted of Donald Harris, Nancy Pfingsten and Mike Reeser.
In July 1979, Mr. Harris began the process of turning over the reins to the young upstarts. Dave Ricci joined the Board of Directors at this time having resigned from his full time position with P.G.and E. The sale of corporate stock began and by 1988, all of the stock was transfered to the new ownership. Mr. Harris continued to serve several years as president and even today, his coffee cup has never been retired. He along with daily visits from another former employee Rex Brisbin, still provide the occasional wit and wisdom to keep Dave and Mike on the straight and narrow.
Over the years, Santa Rosa Fire Equipment Service, Inc. has continued to grow and provide its clients the finest in fire protection equipment and supplies. In 1986 the firm of Ukiah Fire Equipment, Inc. was purchased to add the restaurant kitchen fire suppression systems to the repertoire of services provided. Operated as an independent corperation, Ukiah Fire Equipment Inc. provides fire extinguisher and fire suppression systems services to its clients.
Currently, Santa Rosa Fire Equipment Service, Inc. employs twenty seven people and operates twenty one service vehicles throughout Northern California. The company maintains active membership in the California Automatic Fire Alarm Association (CAFAA), California Association of Fire Equipment Distributors (Cal SAFE), National Association of Fire Equipment Distributors (NAFED), California Fire Chiefs Association - Northern California Fire Protection Officers (NorCal FPO) and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). Santa Rosa Fire Equipment Subscribes to the tenants of the Better Business Bureau and has remained at a "zero complaint" status for each of its membership years.
