This info is considered Public Domain, so use it as you wish, but not for commercial purposes.  It was created to increase the joy and enjoyment of flying gliders/ soaring.

There are lots of limitations with the software we are using in our gps recorders in our gliders.  We can list many of them at the end of this page if you wish.  Please send me your ideas and points and I'll post them.  We sure need better software.

The world of gps for gliders is akin to the world of operating systems for home computers.  We want every old and new piece of software and hardware to be compatible.  Imagine trying to produce software that meets the needs and half-thought out desires of all gliderpilots, in every country, all over the world - an impossible task. The hardware and software is being reinvented, being modified and refined continuosly.  Cambridge has to make money to stay in business, and the only way for them to do this is for them to keep certain thing proprietary, thus, even though we have better ideas, it is impossible to get everyone that makes software and hardware to adopt the new ideas....,  and the lead time from concept, to production, to receipt by the end user is formidable.  It's hard for most of us to keep up with even minor program changes, even on our home computers.

Creating and loading a turnpoint database.
We need a database (db) for each geographic area.  Each db needs to show the gliderport as home, list lots of alternate/ emergency landing fields, and lots of turnpoints along popular routes of predictable lift.  See the web page on turnpoints for more info on how to select, code and create these pages. go to our web page about turnpoints.

Printing out a flight Trace.
I've had many discussion with pilots who would like to display their flight logs on paper in different formats, or include them in other documents, but the cambridge manuals fall short of explaining any of this.

Here is some info on how to print out a flight trace - using "normal" type of software - such as MS Word.

Here are the steps for Windows 95/98:

1) Clear all active programs from your table top.
2) First start, and then minimize MS WORD (so that you can click on other
icons on your table top).
3) Click on CAI and follow the menus to the graph you are trying to print.
4) Press the -ALT-  and -PrtScreen- keys simultaneously. The screen
will blink.
5) Press -ALT- and -TAB- keys simultaneously. WORD will come to
the foreground and CAI will disappear. (Note: do this again
and CAI will come to the foreground. And so on. It toggles)
6) Press -Ctrl- and -v- keys simultaneously and the graph will
appear in color in WORD.
7) Print the flight trace as you would any WORD document.
