"It was a freak of carnivorous development, evolution run amuck in a horror of fangs and talons." —R.E. Howard
This document is currently under development. Don't expect much yet, and you won't be disappointed. Resources for dealing with complexity will be added. Eventually. Maybe. But to what end?
BASIC ALGORITHM OF CHAOS:
Chaos is everywhere, in everything, the structure and mechanism of the universe. Without chaos you wouldn't be here, at least not in any form that you'd recognize. You can master chaos by following this simple recipe:
- Throw stuff around.
- Look for more-or-less order, patterns.
- Change energy levels.
- Goto #1.
Yes, it really is that simple. But the tricky part is step #2. Sometimes that patterned order looks superficially like disorder — the turbulence and vortices of water flowing swiftly over rocks, for instance. But when you get to step #3, you notice that at a new energy level, the disorder looks different — when the water flows faster, the turbulence changes, the vortices move, the spray lands elsewhere. Go back to the prior energy level, and the old 'disorder' returns — and those are the patterns you're looking for.
CHARACTERISTICS OF CHAOS:
- Chaos is what happens in-between the simplicity of small numbers and the statistical regularity of large numbers, where relations are non-linear and transitory and fun.
- Chaos results from irregular complexity, from inputs of energy and resources too rich for detail or simplification, in systems to elusive to be taxed.
- Chaos presents dynamic stability at certain energy levels, tripping-over to different stabilities at different energies, just like in life.
- Chaos is absolutely dependable and absolutely unpredictable.
- Chaos in a system looks rather the same at different scales of time & space.
- Life is chaos; if you weren't chaotic, you'd be a boulder.
- Chaos is more amusing than no order at all.
HOW TO MAKE CHAOS WORK FOR YOU:
- It's always good to strew uncertainty amongst your opponents. The more chaos you can promulgate, the less hold anyone else has upon you.
- Chaos results from complexity. With living systems, complexity gives survivability. With constructed systems, complexity increases chances for failure. Choose your chaos and complexity carefully.
- Certain hormones increase the complexity / chaos levels in humans. Certain chemicals increase chaos while decreasing complexity and the ability to handle confusion. Choose your hormones and chemicals carefully, and those you administer to others. Then DO IT!
- Climate and other environmental factors, and social-economic-ideological factors, may influence the chaos and complexity around you. Take note.
- Don't move to California if you're especially chaotic. The rest of the United States is even less chaos-capable. Italians are masters of dealing with chaos, so if your situation is especially chaotic, relocate to Naples, where chaos is ambient. (Guatemala is also chaos-prone but is rather toxic.) Or build a chaotic web within your own brain. Or move to Antarctica, where you won't bother anyone.
HOW TO MAKE A GAME OF CHAOS:
- Write many rules. Cut them up, glue the pieces together randomly. Make many photocopies and repeat. Then follow or disregard those rules, whatever.
- Don't throw dice or toss coins, those processes are too slow and probabilistic. Instead, shoot streams of dice / coins / tokens with some velocity, noting where they happen to fall, and vary the velocity to obtain different classes of results.
- Don't just move player tokens from place to place on a static playing board. Instead, shake the board violently at specific frequencies, noting where the tokens move to, and vary the frequency to produce different ranges of moves.
- Don't use just a single playing board. Instead, throw groups of boards in all directions -- and shoot holes in them with shotgun blasts. Don't use straight-edged playing boards; make sure that all the edges are fractals. Certain demonstrative effects can be obtained with explosives.
- Keeping score can be tricky. Be creative, like a corporate accountant. Use several calculators set to different number systems. Throw the calculators around.
