The Rule of Threes

[Planescape]

Planescape Master Index

This is an ambitious project which is only just getting started. My goal is to build an index of all characters, places, and items which are referred to in official published Planescape products. This way, when one comes across a reference to somebody or something, one can figure out where else that thing is discussed. Each entry will have the name of the person, place, or thing, the references where it appears, the primary plane which is relevant to it, and a set of keywords. This will be a searchable database, so that you will (for instance) be able to get all names associated with the plane Bytopia, or everything with "athar" as a keyword.

It will take time to build up the index; currently it is very paltry, and as such not very useful. Over time, however, hopefully it will become more useful.

There are two ways to view the index:

  1. List everything in the index alphabetically
  2. Search the index

Progress Report

So far, I've gone through and added names to the index from the following books:

  • Planescape: A Player's Guide to the Planes
  • Planescape: Sigil and Beyond
  • In the Cage: A Guide to Sigil (about half-way through)
  • The Inner Planes (just started)

Obviously, there's still a lot left to do!

Search the Index

Name: of
Plane: of
Keywords: of

Instructions: Enter your search words in the boxes above, separated by spaces. If you enter words in more than one box, the search will return anything that satisfies any of the three conditions. For each box, you can specify whether "any" or "all" of the words in that box must be found for the search to return an entry.

  • Example 1: If you type "Hashkar" in name and "Fiend" in keywords, you will get both anybody named Hashkar and any fiends in the database.
  • Example 2: If you type "fiend" and "outlands" in the keywords box, and leave the "any/all" selector to "any", you will get a long list of all fiends and anybody associated with the Outlands. If you change the "any/all" selector to "all", you will only get fiends associated with the Outlands.

If you want to search for a phrase (i.e. words together), put them in quotes. If you just type:

fraternity of order

into the keywords box, and leave the any/all selector on "any", you will find all entries with any of the words "fraternity", "of", or "order". This probably isn't what you want! You can either switch the any/all selector to "and", or better, enter:

"fraternity of order"

into the keywords box. (None of the searches are case sensitive, so don't worry about upper or lower case letters.)

Hint: If you're looking for people of a given faction, give the faction's full name in the keywords field, not the abbreviation. "Fraternity of Order" should return people in that faction, but they won't be found if you just type "guvners". Don't put in the "the" which appears at the beginning of many faction names; try "fraternity of order", not "the fraternity of order".
