License Requirements

Anyone harvesting abalone who is 16 years of age or older is required to have a fishing license. That license must be on their person if they are shorepicking or within 500 yards of a harvester working from shore. If the harvester is using a boat, the license must be in the boat or on their person. These distance regulations also apply to the Punch Card described below.

Abalone Report Cards
Lost Abalone Cards If you lose your abalone report card, you can go down to a Fish and Game office, swear out an affidavit and get the card replaced. Who knew?

Fill out the Abalone Report Card when you climb on a boat, kayak or beach, whichever comes first. And, yes, I am serious about this..
Whether we end up with Abalone Report Cards or Abalone Report Cards with Tags in 2008, be advised that you're going to need one if :
  • you're under 16 years of age and legally fishing without a license
  • you're over or under 16 years of age and out getting abalone on one of CDFG's "Free Fishing Days".
I've known a few divers who target an annual limit of 30 abalone by not marking their Abalone Report Card on the 2 Free Fishing Days. That's not going to fly in the future.
