A 65-year-old Calaveras County man died of an apparent heart attack Monday while diving for abalone off the Mendocino Headlands, a sheriff's department spokesman said.

It was Mendocino County's first diving-related death of the year, Sgt. Dennis Bushnell said.

The man, who was not named pending notification of his family, was in the water about a half-hour when he submerged for a prolonged period and then floated to the surface, Bushnell said.

His girlfriend, who was watching from shore, alerted other divers who pulled him from the water; he was dead at the scene, Bushnell said.

Bushnell said the man was from Camp Connell and was an experienced diver but had prior medical conditions.
