An abalone diver died off the Sonoma Coast near Timber Cove on Tuesday, apparently succumbing several minutes after going into the water, authorities said.

The man's name wasn't immediately available.

A U.S. Coast Guard lieutenant said the man's wife was with him when he died.

Lt. Shane Greer said she was on the beach when she saw her husband floating in the water and started to scream.

A bystander plunged into the surf and pulled him ashore, Greer said.

Emergency officials were alerted at about 1:45 p.m., and paramedics rushed to the scene to try to revive him.

When Greer and a co-pilot arrived in their helicopter about 30 minutes later, he already was dead, authorities said.

It wasn't clear if the man drowned or died from other causes, authorities said.
