Mile MarkersAlong most federal, state, and county roads in California, you'll see stubby white road markers along the outside edge of the roadways. Every fourth or fifth marker, there's some alpha-numeric information on it. That information includes the road number, the county in which the marker is located, and a mileage number. Though I'm not entirely sure what the mile number actually means, I've found they're a pretty good way to precisely locate dive sites along the Sonoma and Mendocino County coast. For that reason, I include a mile marker for each dive site I've documented on this Web site (in fact, the only thing you might find for some dive sites is the mile marker indicating where it is). The significance of the mileage values found on this Web site is that they "point" to the location of the dive site rather than identifying the access point that leads to a site. Put differently, if you're at or near the mile marker I identify with a specific dive site, turn toward the ocean. Even if you can't see it, you'll be looking down a direct bearing on where it is. Stockhoff Cove, for example, is accessible only by boat probably launched either from Stillwater, Timber, or Ocean Coves. Rather than identify one possible access point, the mile marker I use locates the closest point on Hwy 1 to Stockhoff Cove. How to get to the dive site once located is left to your own devices. |
