North Coast Ocean Conditions
Salt Point State Park Dive Line
The following number hooks you up with the latest conditions information at Gerstle Cove on the Sonoma County coast. It's maintained by the California lifeguards and park rangers who patrol the area and they do their best to offer a useful assessment of surf and visibility. Most are not divers. Those that aren't tend toward a more pessimistic assessment of visibility than those that are (probably, the non-divers are righter than the more optimistic divers). But surf conditions are their particular area of expertise and should be heeded.
If the information on the recording is a few days or weeks old, either conditions have been stable that long or California has finally been shutdown.

Live Web Cams
Unfortunately, Web Cams seem to fall off the Internet as fast as I post their links here. I'll keep trying but don't be too surprised if the following prove to be 404 deadends. If there's nothing here, I'm still looking (and hoping) to add something as I find it (or you folks point them out to me).
Mavericks is a famous surf spot just south of San Francisco. When it's going off, there's not much diving worth doing. If it's REALLY going off, you might want to take a trip down just to watch.
Agate Cove Inn's shots of the cove north of the Mendocino Headlands. You can just make out the NW headlands area in most shots. You also get an idea of how nice a location they have when it comes to ocean views from their accomodations. Not that I've personally experienced staying there but maybe someday...
Marine Weather Conditions
The most valuable ocean conditions tool I know of is:
Chuck Tribolet's North Coast Ocean Conditions
page consolidating information from various sources. It takes some time to get used to reading the graphics but the results are worth it. You have current swell conditions, a three-day swell forecast (forecasting worst case) and ocean-wide wind/swell diagrams that attempt to project what's going to happen up to 106 hours from like right now.
