3 CONVICTED OF ABALONE SALES

Three San Francisco residents have been convicted of illegally selling abalone taken off the Mendocino County coast, according to the Mendocino County district attorney.

Oi Chi Wong, 58, Yao Shao Huang, 28, and Zhen Guo Lu, 32, were each convicted of two counts of illegal abalone sales. Each of them now faces a maximum sentence of one year in jail and a minimum of $118,000 in fines and penalties.

Zhi Hua Li, 39, was acquitted of one count of illegally selling abalone.

The jury couldn't agree on whether a fifth defendant, Jaw Quan Yaw, 28, also sold abalone. It also deadlocked on conspiracy charges against the five people. District Attorney Norman Vroman hasn't decided whether to retry the defendants on the conspiracy charges.

State law prohibits the commercial fishing and sale of abalone because of its dwindling population. Sports fishing of abalone is allowed north of San Francisco.
