BARSTOW
STATION
-- Barstow, CA

|
The Barstow Station development is located in the center of the Mojave Desert, an oasis for travelers between Arizona or Las Vegas and the Los Angeles Basin. This rail theme, 13,000 sq. ft. multi-use tourist retail and fast food complex is adjacent to the Santa Fe main line tracks. At the time of its construction, this development included the world's largest McDonald's restaurant. In addition to a railroad style freighthouse and switchtower, the development includes 11 refrigerator cars, 4 passenger cars, 1 caboose and a business car. We located the refrigerator and passenger cars and traveled to Chicago to inspect and evaluate the passenger railcars. RTR&DC designed the project, coordinated the delivery and installation of the railcars and prepared the construction documents. The design centers on a two story central freight shed retail structure surrounded by 17 railcars and a switchtower. The latter contains an office and project sign. The railcars are used for retail sales, refrigeration, food preparation, bathrooms, dining and offices. The rail theme continues throughout the interior design, signage, lighting, platforms and furnishings. The project has been remodeled and the McDonald's enlarged, as it continues to flourish. The business car, formerly the private car of Reynold's Tobacco heiress Doris Duke and later the Western Pacific Railroad President's car, was purchased at auction by RTR&DC and delivered to Barstow Station in 1975 for the owner's private use. It was recently resold to Reynolds and is undergoing full restoration. (Click Thumbnail To Enlarge)
