CALISTOGA
DEPOT -- Calistoga, CA

The Calistoga Depot is located in the small town of Calistoga, California known for over a century as a spa and mineral springs resort in Napa Valley. When purchased by RTR&DC and partners, this project involved the authentic renovating of the second oldest depot in California in three phases over thirteen years. The railroad station and seven railcar commercial complex consists of a cafe, wine garden, twelve retail shops and a Chamber of Commerce building. The latter is a 1/3 scale depot that was relocated from the Calistoga Steam Railroad. Rail Theme Restoration & Development Co. placed this landmark on the National Register of Historic Places, located and purchased the railcars, designed the restoration, and produced construction documents, prepared a bank finance package, completed the permit process and obtained all approvals. We designed the graphics, interiors, and lighting - all in keeping with railroad and Calistoga history. The accurate restoration of railcars and depot, including replication of their lettering, required RTR&DC to conduct research from its personal resources, public libraries and State Railroad Museum archives. Construction and construction crew supervision was undertaken by RTR&DC. Upon completion RTR&DC continued its participation by lease preparation, tenant selection, designing and constructing some tenant improvements, and conducting day-to-day maintenance, management and publicity work. This unique setting features both historic and commercial railroad theme displays including platform artifacts, photos, two railroad truck trailers, a turn of the century freight wagon, a track speeder and a semaphore - all provided and restored by RTR&DC. RTR&DC sold its interest in 1987, but has been called back on several occasions for consultation work.
