RAILROAD
MOTEL & RESTAURANT -- Yreka, CA
1973
This project was to be constructed beside Interstate 5 in the rural town of Yreka, California. It was to be a 34 unit motel, restaurant and lounge complex adjacent to the existing depot and engine house of the Yreka Western Railroad. RTR&DC designed a rail theme which utilized the irregular-shaped site that was not well suited for conventional development. The concept used passenger railcars for a variety of motel units, office space, dining and club lounge uses which were linked by a platform that provided covered access to the cars, additional dining and lounge space.
RTR&DC were co-owners and co-developers in this project. We located the railcars, provided the design, built a model, prepared a business plan and obtained a city use permit, but project financing was not forthcoming.
