William (Bill) O’Hara
1925 - 2006
In loving memory of Robert William
(Bill) O’Hara, who died peacefully Saturday morning, April
29th, 2006, at 7:15am at the Petaluma Care & Rehabilitation
Center. A native of Fresno, he was born in January 1925, to Alma
Jean Appel and Ruben Roland O’Hara. He was a veteran of
WWII who served in Europe. In 1949 he graduated from California
Polytechnic State University’s Engineering School. He was
widowed by Mary Ellen Sullivan in December 1978 after a marriage
of 30 years. Both he and Mary Ellen were active in the Civil Rights
Movement of the 1960s, Bill once serving as President of the Catholic
Interracial Council of the San Francisco Archdioceses. He retired
in the late 1980s from Lockheed (Moffitt Field). His helpmate
of 28 years, Joan Ewing is currently in the care of her daughter
Janet, in Berkeley. Joan & Bill traveled the world extensively
with Veterans for Peace and were members of the Mid Peninsula
& Santa Rosa Peace Centers. Bill was also a member of the
MG Owners Club, and recently refurbished, for the fourth time
since 1958, his right-hand drive 1950 MGTD. Bill loved life and
wanted to make the world a better place for those who came after
him. He is survived by his sister Margaret (Peg) Louise Smith
of Fresno, and his 7 children: Peg(#2) & Seán(#3) in
California, Kate(#6) in Oregon, James(#4) & Pat (#7) in Wisconsin,
and Tim(#1) & Moira(#5) in Massachusetts. A memorial service
was held on Saturday, May 6th, at Santa Rosa Unitarian Universalist
Congregation, 547 Mendocino Ave., Santa Rosa, in the Religious
Education Commons. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to
the Peace and Justice Center of Sonoma County, 467 Sebastopol
