WORK IN PROGRESS, Yosemite print
In September I backpacked in Yosemite National Park with friends. While camped at Mildred Lake I took a photograph of the view west from the lake. This view includes Half Dome, Clouds Rest, and the eastern edge of Yosemite Valley. When back home I decided to use this photo for a new aquatint.
The edges of the new plate are beveled. The plate is also polished with very fine steel wool and cleaned with alcohol.
A draw tool is used to cut the copper plate to the desired size. In this case 18.5" x 8".
The slide I have decided to work from is scanned into the computer. Photoshop is used to crop the image and convert it into black and white. A copy is made. It is then flipped (to compensate for the image reversal that happens when a plate is printed) and broken into four parts (to make it easier to work from). These images are printed onto photo paper. They will be what I refer to as I draw onto the new plate.
The plate is covered with powdered rosin and then placed on a hotplate.
The heat melts the rosin into small acid resistant dots on the plate. This view is about 1/2 inch by 1/4 inch.
