In the summer of 1988 I hiked the John Muir Trail, which travels 221 miles from Yosemite Valley to the summit of Mount Whitney. I took photographs along the trail and over the next year and a half did a suite of 17 etchings of this Sierra Nevada backpack.

My original plan was to put together a bound portfolio called, "The John Muir Trail Suite", which was to include all 16 prints, (Distant Horizons was added later). I was also planning to sell the prints individually. It was suggested that I add a special extra print to the portfolio, so I did a hand colored etching of the shoes used on the hike. The portfolio idea did not happen, but the hand colored and un-colored Trail Shoes did.
