Sebastopol City Council
Car-Free Day Resolution
January 2002
(withdrawn when consensus was
not possible)
Whereas, the
volume of traffic in Sebastopol has increased significantly during the
past several years; and
Whereas, this
traffic volume increase diminishes the quality of life in Sebastopol
through deterioration of air quality, increased noise levels, reduced
safety for pedestrians and inconveniences for all residents; and
Whereas, 40%
of vehicle trips are of two miles or less; and
Whereas, the
great majority of our vehicles burn petroleum, a non-renewable resource;
and
Whereas, we
are not directly deterred by the detrimental impacts resulting from
the use of petroleum, which includes air and water pollution, public
health problems, release of carbon dioxide to earth’s atmosphere; and
Whereas, the
voluntary reduction of automobile driving would have a salutary effect
on our public health, environmental quality, economic well-being, and
the quality of life in Sebastopol.
NOW, THEREFORE,
BE IT RESOLVED, The Sebastopol City Council supports community efforts
to reduce the amount of petroleum consumed by residents through the
use of alternative forms of transportation or use of lesser or non-polluting
fuels; and
BE IT FURTHER
RESOLVED, The Sebastopol City Council supports the efforts of Sebastopol
Car-Lite to encourage residents to join together on the first Sunday
of every month to use alternative forms of transportation to reduce
the use of petroleum fuel and to use other forms of transportation that
day, including walking, bicycling and public transit.
