2006 Sonoma County Environmental Awards
Honoring
Environmental Education
in Sonoma County
The Sonoma County Conservation
Council (SCCC) is the federation of 20
non-profit groups that operate the Environmental Center in Santa Rosa. Every
March at our annual dinner we celebrate people and projects that really make
a difference. Outstanding environmental educators are honored as well as
nominees for Environmentalist of the Year and Ernestine I. Smith Lifetime
Environmental Commitment Award. This year we have expanded the process to
include environmental education projects and programs.
The 2006 popular dinner and awards
ceremony will be held Saturday, March 4 from 5:30 – 9 pm at the Sebastopol
Veteran's Auditorium. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Carl Wong will
give a short talk on local environmental education initiatives (K-12) and
present the awards with Ray Peterson, President of the Board of
Education. The master of ceremonies will be Craig Litwin, Sebastopol
City Council Member and Co-Director of Sonoma County Conservation
Action.
In addition, a free county-wide
forum, “Safely Reducing School Traffic in Sonoma County” will be
held that afternoon at the same location from 2:00 – 5:00 pm. Designed to
stimulate coordinated action and initiate a dialog going at each and every
school, the three hour event will showcase existing initiatives, introduce
resources and strategies, brainstorm how attention can be brought to bear in
your community and develop next steps for schools, interested groups and
individuals.
