This is
just inside the Lafeyette cemetery. A word on above-ground cemeteries,
which you see a lot around here: New Orleans is actually below sea level-
the whole area is like a shallow bowl. This means the water table is
right up there. Which means that burying things in the ground can
turn a little nasty as they have a tendency to pop back up again. Hence,
the above-ground burials. More on this later.
