This is the only town I have not reproduced word for word. Most entries contain a muster date and I have not included it here since it is always two or three weeks after the enlistment date.
I believe these records are incomplete since they contain no names beginning with D or E which seems strange. George Bishop, color bearer for the 154th is not included. His brother, Lewis Bishop, who preceded him as 154th color bearer is included but only his service in the 37th is shown. These two are the subjects of a booklet: Brothers, Heroes, and Martyrs: the Civil War service of Lewis and George Bishop, color bearers of the 154th New York Volunteer Infantry (Allegany, NY: Allegany Area Historical Association, 1994) by Mark Dunkleman. Their exploits are also included in Dunkleman's wonderful book about the 154th.
While the 154th was more geographically representative of Cattaraugus County, the 64th was the first regiment raised almost entirely within the county and thus gained the title the Cattaraugus regiment. Phisterer's New York in the War of the Rebellion claims that Co. I of the 64th was raised in Olean. Olean contributed a couple of officers but these records reveal that most of Co. I was raised in Allegany.
Since Allegany contributed such a high percentage of its men to the 64th I am going to endeavor to briefly list their accomplishments here.
The army of the Potomac, prior to the arrival of the 64th, had been badly beaten at Bull Run (1st Manassas) and at Balls Bluff. In each of those battles, the Blue Army had retreated in disarray. The 64th first tasted battle at Seven Pines (Fair Oaks). The Federals were in danger of a repeat of Bull Run and Balls Bluff when the division of which the 64th was a part, crossed a swollen river on swaying pontoons and surprised the confederates who smelled blood. The 64th and the rest of their Brigade were responsible for preventing another Bull Run.
The Cattaraugus regiment was in the thick of the action during most of the ensuing 7 days' battle. They were among the last union troops to leave the peninsula and thus missed second Bull Run.
At Antietam the 64th together with the 61st NY took the famous Sunken Road and were the last to retreat from that position.
In the suicidal attack on Maye's Heights at Fredericksburg the 64th was in the Brigade which got closest to the wall behind which the confederates fought.
Chancellorsville was another union disaster, but again the 64th distinguished itself, providing cover for the disorderly retreat of the 11th Corps and acting as rear guard for the entire army as it retreated across the river.
Everyone has an opinion as to what unit or units prevented another Federal defeat at Gettysburg. The fans of the 20th Maine and the 1st Minnesota have long credited their regiments with saving the day here but a creditable argument could be made that it was the 64th NY out in front in the wheat field that tipped the scales in favor of the blue army. I will have more to say about this when I post Little Valley.
During the 40 days from the wilderness to the siege of Petersburg the Cattaraugus boys were always at the front, always in the middle of the action. This was especially true at Spotsylvania Courthouse about which I will write more when I post the town of Randolph.
The 64th fought under Generals Howard, Barlow, Miles, Richardson, Hancock, Brooke, Gibbon, Humphreys and Ramsay. Its hardest fighting was under Hancock, "the Superb."
Colonel Fox in his work Regimental Losses says of the 2nd Corp:
"The hardest fighting and the greatest loss of life occurred in the 1st division (Hancock's), in which more men were killed or wounded than in any other division, East or West. Within its ranks were the Irish Brigade and crack regiments like the fifth New Hampshire, one hundred & fortieth Pennsylvania and the Sixty fourth New York. The last named regiment was present at a greater number of engagements than any other regiment in the Service during the war of the Rebellion."
In August, September and October of 1864 most of the men from Cattaraugus who had fought so long and hard, their three years having expired, returned to the rolling hills, meandering cricks, and country cooking they had been yearning for. According to the dairy of Martin Sigman of Co. C only one man, of those who re-enlisted, survived unwounded at the end of the war. Eight hundred and forty-eight, mostly farmers, had departed Elmira on December 10, 1861. From the 848 only one man had been with the regiment throughout, Color Sergeant Nicholas Whitmire brought the regimental colors home with him in the spring of 1865.
Nicholas' greatgrandson Bob Whitmeyer is interested in learning more about the Regiment, if you know of diaries, letters or any materials relating to the 64th, or you are a descendent of the regiment please contact him at rwhitmeyer@mindspring.com or yours truly at dennisc@sonic.net.
