Welcome to the Cattaraugus County in the Civil War home page. The originals of the data which forms the basis of this page are located in the Cattaraugus County historian's office in Little Valley. My thanks to Cattaraugus County historian Kenneth Kysor for reproducing it and answering my many questions. Mr. Kysor has no knowledge of when these documents were prepared or by whom. I speculate that it may be the data collected by the town clerks pursuant to directions from Albany which resulted in the Adjutant-General's report in 1901. However, data from some towns contains a few references to events subsequent to 1901. I have attempted to reproduce it here, complete with errors and misspellings. Wherever I have made corrections or an addition I have so indicated.
I have posted Napoli first because that is where I was born on the same farm my Great Grandfather purchased following his service in the 64th N.Y. Volunteers, the Cattaraugus regiment. (While called the Cattaraugus regiment, it was composed largely of men from Gowanda, Randolph, Leon, Napoli, Conewango, Mansfield, Little Valley, New Albion, Farmersville, Dayton, Allegany and Otto. Ashford, Portville, Ischua and Machias contributed none. Yorkshire contributed one man who enlisted in August of 1864.) The 64th fought in more battles than any other Union regiment. As part of the Army of the Potomac it won only one pivotal battle, Gettysburg. Like the great racehorse Alydar who lost every match with his principal foe the champion Affirmed, the 64th always responded with an effort that Cattaraugus County could be proud of.
Cattaraugus County in 1861 did not contain a city, yet it contributed about four thousand combatants to a war they had no role in causing. Sent to a hospital in Baltimore for a wound received at Gettysburg, Col. Daniel Bingham of the 64th eloquently expressed the sentiments of the entire 4,000 when he applied for a leave of absence:
"I ask for the leave of absence believing that by going to my home in western N.Y. ...into a more invigorating climate, with a country diet, I would much sooner recover my strength and be able to rejoin my Regt. than if I remained here, as I have not gained since I have come to the city."
For those who could return the invigorating climate and country diet were still there, for those who could not, may they rest in peace.

Before I discovered these records I had no knowledge of any connection between my family and Great Valley. Once I discovered my great-grandfather's brother, Zachery Taylor Conklin in this data I found the whole family in the 1850 census for Great Valley.
Prior to my perusal of this data I had been unsuccessful in attempts to learn anything about the person listed in our family bible as Zachery Conklin and alleged to have starved to death in 1862 in Andersonville. I knew this was inaccurate (Andersonville did not open until 1864) but the National Archives had no record of any Zachary Conklin. With the clues revealed herein I am still accumulating details of the short and tragic life of Zachary Taylor Conklin, not unique but typical for this bloody conflict which killed one in four white male southerners and one in ten white male northerners.
I hope that this data will assist others in unraveling similar puzzles from their family history.
