East Otto, a rural community composed almost entirely of farmers in the 1860's, contributed 145 men to the blue army. Two of these were my great, great grandmother's brothers Zina and Ole D. Satterlee who joined the 9th Cavalry in 1864. Ole, appointed company blacksmith, survived the war uninjured. It is likely that the company blacksmith in a Cavalry unit was far too important to be exposed to combat. Just why 41 year old Zina Satterlee, father of four, joined the blue army in 1864 is unclear. In February 1865, Zina became one of the 27,000+ New Yorkers who were overcome by various bacterias while in the service of the Union, every bit as dead as their 11,000+ comrades from the empire state who fell to rebel bullets.
Most of the Cattaraugus men in the Calvary were in the 9th. The 9th was in General Wesley Merritt's division and was attached to the Army of the Potomac throughout the war.
For the most part Cavalry in this war performed scouting and screening functions for the infantry and thus participated in every fight in which the Army of the Potomac was involved. In addition to scouting and screening for the infantry, the Cavalry's function was raid and plunder. The 9th was part of the raid in May 1864 which resulted in the destruction of most of the confederate supplies at Lee's advance supply base at Beaver Dam Station. This raid culminated in the Battle of Yellow Tavern where the famous Rebel Cavalry general Jeb Stuart was killed. A Michigan trooper in the same brigade as the 9th shot him.
The 9th was also a part of Sheridan's famous action in the Shenandoah Valley which laid waste to that source of supplies for Lee's army.
