Winter Sports and other activities in Utah.

What can you do that that is different from basic skiing and snowboarding? Let's look at Winter Sports activities first. How about doing something different?

1. Heli-skiing or helicopter skiing. Guided down hill skiing and snowboarding are available from Snowbird. This activity should be booked early. If you plan to do this for a day, book the day for early in your vacation. Heli -skiing is weather dependent. If the weather is bad your heli-skiing will be cancelled. If you book for an early date in your vacation you may be be able to reschedule if there are other days that are not filled. The Wasatch Powder Guides (operators of heli-skiing at Snowbird) like the period from from the middle of December to the middle of February for the best snow conditions. See www.heliskiwasatch.com or phone 801 742-2800.

2. Ski jumping , Bobsled , Luge , and Skeleton. At the Utah Olympic Park there are opportunities for recreational skiers to learn to ski jump or for the public to have recreational rides on the Bobsled/Luge track. The Park is located 4 miles northwest of Park City via Highway 224. See www.utaholympicpark.org . Check for available dates and times at 435 658-4200

3. Ice skating and recreation. There are several ice rinks in the area but Cottonwood Heights Recreation Center which is located below the Cottonwood Canyons has a rink and other nice facilities supported by local property taxes.I understand that it is open to the public for a slightly higher fee. See www.cottonwoodheights.com or phone 801 943-3190

4. Cross Country Skiing. Bryce Canyon National Park has cross country skiing trails and is only 260 miles South of Salt Lake City. If you have time you could add a trip to Bryce Canyon at the end of your vacation.

5. Professional Sports. The Utah Jazz have had an excellent record at basketball over the years www.nba.com/jazz/schedule and The Utah Grizzlies of The American Hockey League www.utahgrizzlies.com play a high quality game with many NHL stars spending time in this league. Both teams play in down town Salt Lake City.

6. Browsing the shops. The Gateway Plaza, The Crossroads Plaza and Trolley Square are all down town in Salt Lake City. Park City has a very pleasant Main Street with old buildings and shops with the mountains around.

7. Genealogy. For people interested in tracing their roots Salt Lake City has a Genealogy Library which ranks among the best in the Country where you can trace your Family Tree.www.familysearch.org. The phone number is 801 240-2331 or 800 453-3860 ext.22331.

8. Mormon Choir. The Mormon Tabernacle Choir practices are on Thursday evenings at 8:00 P.M. at the Temple. Their world wide recognition is well deserved and the practices are worth a visit. www.mormon.org/learn/0,8672,1075-1,00.html.
