See below for Local Transportation       See below for Directions to Class

After classes begin, motel rooms can often be arranged to be shared with another student to slash prices in half. (It may not be as easy to share accommodations for those who need to stay over just for occasional class nights.) See "Reasonable Accommodations" below for details. The first Inn listed in the left column is where our classes are held, and the next one is within walking distance.

Call or email the hotel directly to make your reservation. Be sure to mention HTI to get special rates offered to our students. Most of the rates below are promised throughout 2016, but we can't guarantee all of them. Besides the discounts listed below, if you stay in a California hotel at least 31 consecutive days, you can arrange to avoid paying sales tax.

Reserve EARLY! This is a very popular area. These hotels can get booked on some days several months in advance.

Reasonable Accommodations Ideas

First, let's again emphasize that if you stay at least 31 consecutive days at the same accommodations, you can arrange to avoid paying sales tax.

Local hotel prices are reflective of this being an upscale, popular area between San Francisco, beautiful parks and beaches, and the wine country. However, we've negotiated large discounts with many accommodations for 2016. Sharing can, in most cases, help you further slash the cost in half. All of our accelerated classes have students from other states and countries who are actively seeking to share accommodations, but it is much better to arrange this once classes begin. (In fact, you can begin to meet classmates at our optional get-acquainted meeting the evening before class begins.) Plan on having your own private room for the first two or three nights, then a motel room can usually be shared for the remainder of the time.

Or other opportunities may be even more appealing. For example, we have connections for rooms in private homes in the area for reasonable prices. If interested in this option, get more information by phoning or emailing Pat at the HTI office. And once classes have begun, another possibility may be to get a room at a local classmate's home, which would cost considerably less than motel rates.

For those of you who have a travel trailer or other camping gear and like the outdoors, there are some lovely parks in the area with reasonable rates. There is also Marin Park, (a trailer park) about a mile from class (see above).

There can be many creative ways to keep costs down. For example, the Marin Headlands Hostel tends to draw mature adults of all ages who appreciate nature. Sharing a private room with two classmates could cost $28 per night each, and if a car is needed the costs can be shared of a reasonable rented car as described below.

Public Transportation from the
San Francisco International Airport

From the San Francisco Airport take the Marin Airporter (phone: 415/461-4222; $20 one way) from any of the blue pillars downstairs at ground level for all domestic flights. This bus comes through on a regular schedule (usually every half-hour) which is posted on the pillars. Get off at the fourth stop (about an hour drive) at Larkspur Landing, which is within a mile of our class location. From there take a taxi if you are going to the Marin Suites Hotel or another nearby motel. If you are staying at the Corte Madera Inn, call 924-1502 from Larkspur Landing for their complimentary shuttle.

For international flights, the new pick-up point for the Marin Airporter is on the arrivals (baggage claim) level. To find the bus, cross to the Center Island Transportation Zone, and wait at the green and white striped curb. Look for the sign saying "Airporter". Please note: This is a new pick-up location. They no longer pick up on the ground floor in Courtyard "A".

You can also take the Marin Door to Door from the airport. This 24-hour service is $45 one way; $12 for each additional person. Call 415/457-2717 to make arrangements. If you call by noon the day before, they will meet you on time for your flight arrival.

Public Transportation from the
Oakland International Airport

The Oakland Airport is just as close to our class location as the San Francisco Airport. Some airlines may charge less to fly into Oakland.

From the Oakland Airport take the Sonoma County Airport Express (phone: 800-327-2024; $26 to San Rafael, round trip tickets are available onboard at a discount) which leaves the Oakland airport every 2 hours from 6 am to 9:15 pm. Buses pick up passengers directly outside baggage claim in the center island at the regional transportation stop. It is about an hour's ride to the San Rafael Transit Hub. From there you can take a taxi south to Corte Madera, which is about 3 miles.

Marin Door to Door (see above) is $50 from this airport.
Reasonable Automobile Rentals
at Both Airports

Here are the car rental agencies with offices near the San Francisco and Oakland Airports that are usually the most reasonable. Note: car rental rates via websites are sometimes higher than via phone calls. Also, the best deals, such as those quoted below, are often the ones done well in advance.

Economy car rates as of early January 2016: (These change frequently)
Enterprise Rent-a-Car
www.enterprise.com, 650/697-9200, extension 5.
As of this writing, compact car rates for HTI students at the San Francisco and Oakland airports are $173 per week, plus tax and airport fees. Get the HTI discount code by contacting Pat at the HTI office.

Dollar Rent A Car
www.dollar.com, 800-800-4000.
As of this writing, current HTI rates are $150 per week at theSan Francisco airport and $208 per week at the Oakland airport, plus tax and fees.

Thrifty Rent a Car
www.thrifty.com, 800-THRIFTY
They have the same price structure as Dollar Rent A Car.

All of the above rates include generous free mileage, but not insurance, nor extra fees for persons under age 25. Be sure to confirm all costs when reserving your car. The added fees are usually lower at the Oakland Airport than the San Francisco Airport.

For all of the above agencies, if your arrival is at the San Francisco terminal, take the blue AirTrain via short term parking and ride to the rental car center for offices on the 4th floor.
