Network Engineer
Description:
Sonic.net is seeking a Full-Time Network Engineer to join our team. We are looking for bright, dedicated individuals who have experience in administering and growing carrier networks.
Job Title: Network Engineer
Department: Network Operations
Shift: Monday-Friday, 9am-6pm
Roles and Responsibilities:
- Develop, maintain and improve the Sonic.net IP/MPLS backbone, ensuring network diversity and survivability
- Manage and monitor deployment of network Operations Support Software
- Advise management on needed network assets and upgrades
- Be an escalation point of contact for the Network Operations Center on highly technical issues
- Track all issues in a ticketing system
- Help define and document operations Methods & Procedures for the NOC department
- Implement and strictly follow change management procedures and systems
- Document changes in location, status, and configurations of assets and resources
- Ensure escalations are handled in a professional, consistent, and relentless manner
- Support equipment delivery processes and equipment configuration as required
- Provide technical leadership and mentoring to members of the NOC staff, assisting them in their technical and professional development

Required Experience:
- Experience with TCP/IP, BGP, MPLS and the operation of Cisco and Juniper routing equipment
- Engineering-level knowledge of fiber, DWDM, SONET, ATM, and related technologies a plus
- Expertise in the configuration and management of network Operational Support Software
- Experience in the carrier industry
- Advanced knowledge of routing protocols
- Experience with L2/L3 VPN technologies
- Degree from a recognized college or university, with a bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, electrical engineering, or a related field. Qualifying experience and/or technical certification (e.g. CCNA/CCNP, MCSE, etc.) may substitute for the required education
- Ideally, 3 to 5 years of relevant 24x7x365 NOC experience, preferably at a carrier-class level with an Internet or Application Service Provider.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving and technical troubleshooting skills
- Strong verbal and written communication skills; ability to remain composed and professional in stressful, high pressure situations.
- Highly motivated, self-starter with a positive attitude and strong initiative to face the challenges of a very fast-paced, high-energy, customer-focused operations organization
Technical Competence:
- Network management, including monitoring, capacity, performance, and service level reporting
- Knowledge of Wide area network technologies, such as ISDN, Frame Relay, T1, DS3, OC3/OC12, and other carrier-based services
- Solid understanding and practical use of TCP/IP and related Internet protocols. IPv6 experience is a plus
- Network monitoring tools and techniques, switches, routers, firewalls, and IP addressing.
- Expert in the use of UNIX/ Linux -based operating systems and CLI environments; shell/Perl scripting capabilities are highly desirable
- Schedule flexibility with ability to work non-standard business hours and shifts
- Knowledge working on Cisco and Juniper router/switch/firewall platforms
