IMAGE OF EARTH AND QUILL

Guest Poet Jonathan Mitchell

Land of the morning calm

Trouble looming at the DMZ
Bewildered, naïve foreigners preaching ABCs
Land of the morning calm
Learned by rote

Globalize, beautify, unify
Burden of the irregular verb
Enemy soldiers raping and pillaging
Seeking diction and inner peace

Land mines, a constant reminder
Children gawking, adults staring
Christianity sweeps the nation
Phonemes altered

Homogeneous people struggle
Competition with Hangul
Genealogy changed forever
Lessons learned in the morning calm

Jonathan Mitchell's questions:

1. What do you think of the structure, or lack thereof? Keep in mind, that I'm an amateur poet.

2. Are comparisons between Korean history and the experience of an English teacher effective?
