Freelance Writer and Editor, 1986 to present
Provide writing, editing, proofreading, and indexing services by contract to publishing, editorial development, and production houses. Specialize in educational materials and nonfiction trade books. Recent projects and clients include the following:

Educational Publishing

  • Author of nine science activity books for grades K-6, published by Delta Education, Inc.: Observing an Aquarium, Weather Watching, Finding the Moon and Classroom Plants (1995-1996); Wheels at Work, Clever Levers, Using Your Senses, Flight and Rocketry, and Oceans (1997). Copyeditor for an additional twenty science activity books for the same publisher (1993-1995).
  • Contributing writer for Science Interactions, a science program for grades 6-8 developed by Quarasan, Inc. for Glencoe, a division of Macmillan/McGraw-Hill (1992).
  • Contributing writer for Government In America, a high school textbook published by Houghton Mifflin Co. (1990).
  • Production editor for four reading programs for grades K-8, published by Houghton Mifflin Co.: The Literature Experience (1990, 1992), Celebremos la literatura (1993), and Invitations to Literacy (1995).

Publishing Experience

Freelance Writer/Editor, January 1996 - present:

  • For Delta Education, Nashua, NH: edited books of 75 physical science and 75 life science activities to accompany kits of materials for grades 3-5, including developmental editing of manuscript and art specs, activity testing, all stages of proof, and coordination among author, reviewers, project director, and desktop publisher.
  • For Delta Education and Prue & Olive Publishing Co.: wrote, tested, and revised performance-based assessments for fourteen hands-on science units for grades K-6, in life, earth, and physical sciences.
  • For Great Source Education Group, Wilmington, MA: reviewed two potential acquisitions for middle and high school science and advised client on market potential.

Supervising Editor, 1991-1995, D.C. Heath and Co. School Division, Lexington, MA, Science Department:
Worked with executive editor, authors, marketing manager, and sales to plan and implement projects; supervised editors; interviewed and trained new staff; prepared and managed budgets and schedules; oversaw program development; kept projects to deadlines; prepared requests for quotes for outside vendors. Responsibilities on specific projects listed below.

  • Middle Level Science (not published): recruited high-profile series authors; conceptualized product and curricular design with editorial, design, marketing, sales, and authors; identified market research needs; planned project schedule and budget; led a cross-functional work team; organized and led meetings of authors and consultants; oversaw editorial aspects of prototype development.
  • Science 2000 Ó 1995 by Decision Development Corporation (DCC): Multimedia-based science curriculum for grades 5-8; cooperative business agreement between D.C. Heath and DDC. Reviewed product for accuracy, appropriateness, and attention to educational reforms. Advised DDC on fulfilling needs for Texas submission. Edited text files. Worked with programmers on software simulation plans.
  • Perspectives on Health Ó 1994: Supervised writing, editing, and production of teacher’s edition, ancillaries, and parts of student edition (produced using Quark XPress). Managed freelance help. Edited features and page layouts. Assisted in RFQ preparation and in evaluation and awarding of bids to outside vendors. Established regular and productive lines of communication among editorial, marketing, and sales.

Supervised and trained staff and freelance editors in addition to completing own editing assignments through all phases of product development. Supervised development of ancillary components by outside vendors.
