Mining Salt

Do you know where
the salt on your
dinner table comes
from? There is lots of
salt in the ocean, but
it’s hard to get out.
Most of the time, we
get our salt from big
salt rocks under the
ground.

First we dig out as
much salt rock as we
can. Then we build a
deep well to the salt
rock and pump water

down to it. Any salt that’s down there
dissolves into the water. Then we pull the
salt water back up. Last, we evaporate the
water off by heating it in big pans.

What’s left? Salt!
