Coming to Jill and Danny's wedding, plus a re-invitation!

Greetings Family!! Been some time since I added to this here letter and so it's time that I contribute. First, as always I hope everyone is well.   I wish to thank everyone for the words of kindness and  support for my dad and our family during my dad's medical  difficulties. I'm sure that it helped perk him back up to his  old self. A big welcome to the circle to Brad Stevenson out in Arizona! I just made my flight arrangements to come to the U.S. for  Thanksgiving (in Los Angeles with Zip and Co.) and then to  take a flight to Maryland to be at Jill and Danny's wedding  and then a final flight from Maryland back to  Paris....whooo....I'm going to be tired when I get back! Danny and Jill, sorry that you had problems with adding to  the circle letter. I examined the web programming code of  your additions and noticed that you were using a slightly old  version of Aol's web browser. If you update your version you  shouldn't have any more problems. It sure has been a pleasure keeping up with the goings on in  everyone's family!  Hey Aunt Sally....do you Accept French Francs for the family  lotto??? (big smile) Cousin Lisa, hope you and your family are doing o.k. down  there in Florida what with that big storm. Loved your lotto poem Aunt Mary! Andy and Lynna.....what an adventure you have had over there  in PNG....I know that I for one will miss your letters from  there now that you two are moving to Canada (wow, what a  difference!). It will be nice to speak French with you guys! STAR STEVENSON M.S.P.T.

Yes, it has finally happened.  Almost 8 years of education  has culminated in a Master's of Science in Physical Therapy  and more recently I passed the national boards in physical  therapy and the California law, regulation, and malpractice  exam!!!  Currently I am waiting to receive my license to  practice and in a few days expect to be interviewing for a  new position.  I am hoping to land a position at either a  large teaching hospital (UC Davis Medical Center) or a  sports medicine clinic so that I can begin to pay back the  $70,000.00 loan I needed for graduate school!...(Ouch)   Jennifer is entering her second of 4 years of Veterinarian  School.  We spent most of the summer working and remodeling  a old duplex in Davis CA (I have a garage with a washer and  dryer for the first time in my life!) I write later when I  have a J-O-B!                       Love Star&Jennifer - Sunday, September 17, 2000 at 18:30:07 (PDT) Author: jennstar@calweb.com

Congratulations to you Star on having your very first  washer and dryer of your whole life ! Doing laundry is , and always has been,my favorite  household job, so I can truly appreciate how much you are  enjoying your new appliances ! Do you have a soak cycle and  a softener dispenser? Now you can buy those huge bottles of  detergent since you won't be carrying your supplies to a  laundromat anymore. I am sooo happy for you. When I next see you we can discuss serious stain removal  and the virtues of scented fabric softeners. Can't wait ! Quick Clarification

Hi All, First, congratulations to Star! All that hard work is about  to pay off (hopefully in more ways than one, eh?). This is just a quick note to reassure Scott and everyone  else that Andy and Lynna are NOT MOVING TO CANADA. I, Matt,  and my wife Amy, are the ones who moved to Canada, where Amy  is going to school. Andy and Lynna will be in Papua New Guinea for about 18 more  months, so the letters will definitely keep coming! In fact,  they just spent a month traveling around PNG, including  visits to Wewak and Medang. I am hoping to get another  letter from him  soon, and it will of course be posted to  this site. Congratulations Star!!! Wow that is soooo awesome! Mom told  me that you passed the exam on the phone the other day! I wish you all the success to find a good J-O-B, I'm sure  you'll do well! Also congrats on the wash machine and dryer...I remember  buying my own the first time....it was very convienient. Matt and Amy, I'm now pulling my foot out of my mouth about  my thought that Andy and Lynna were moving to Canada. I  remember when I had (mis)read it...I thought it rather  strange but now it's all very clear.  Actually it's somewhat amazing because just before you added  that letter I had met a girl here in Paris who as a McGill  Alumus prepares French students who have signed up for  classes at McGill with orientations. In fact I went to one of  her informal orientations and met a number of people who were  going to be attending McGill (in the same class as Amy) this  year.  So now you're all moved in, I hope you like the life  there...it should be a good experience.  By your letter I'm wondering if there were others who made  the same mistake as I did in thinking that it was Andy and  Lynna who were going to Canada? (laughing to myself). I hope you two really take the opportunity to learn some  French because it would be very cool to speak with you two  that way. Letter #18 from PNG

Letter #18 August 26, 2000 Greetings,   Time to wield the 'ol fountain pen again.  Right now we are  waiting on a boat in Wewak for departure to Madang.  We are  expecting to leave in three hours when we should have left  an hour ago.  Why are we on the boat three hours early?   Well, thanks to the "kid glove treatment," they let all the  white people on early!  Otherwise we would have to fight  with the crowd in order to get on early enough to ensure  that we get one of the limited number of beds. People have  to push and shove like they're trying to get to the front  row of a Rolling Stones concert!  So I think I will accept  the kid glove treatment for this. When I last wrote we were in Madang for our Peace Corps  early service conference.  It was great to see everyone from  our group and find out how they are doing.  Unfortunately,  three couples have left for various reasons.  There are 12  couples left (the bigger, stronger, and meaner ones), and  most of them are doing fairly well.  Everyone was quite  impressed by the sign language research project we started  (Heck, I'm impressed myself!).  What was really nice is they  put us up in the best resort in Madang! Also, while we were  in Madang we hooked up with a local expert and he took us  out diving on his boat.  We saw eels, giant clams, lion  fish, a ship wreck and lots of brightly colored fish.  We  also spent a night in a guest house on one of the islands  off of Madang.  It was made of bush materials.  Madang is  probably the nicest looking town in PNG.  All along the  streets there are huge shade trees with vines, ferns,  staghorns, and orchids growing off them, on them, and in  them.   These trees are an ecosystem unto themselves. Madang is fairly safe. We were able to walk around at night  in groups.  One of the neatest things about Madang is the  large bats.  They are so big people call them flying foxes.   They have a wing span up to a meter (3 feet), big enough to  kill and eat!  They look kind of creepy when you see them on  sale at the market.  But in the sky they are an awesome  sight to behold.  They roost in the tops of the giant trees  around town, with as many as a hundred in one tree.  At  dusk, they all come out and there will be thousands of  flying bats in the sky all at once!  At night, I keep  expecting to see a big spotlight with an outline of a bat in  it! We also got to go out and visit the site of another couple  near Madang.  They are living in a village and helping the  locals set up an eco-tourism business.  They have a neat  little house and office made out of bush materials, and all  the furniture inside is also made of bush materials.  The  village has a guest house and visitors can do bush walks,  bird watching, and bamboo rafting.  This is more like what I  had envisioned my PC experience would have been like.  Sure  it is hot and sweaty here on the coast, but you get used to  it, or rather you learn to tolerate it better.  Also, you  learn to suppress that Western Culture busybody attitude,  and sloooooow down .  I only sweat half a gallon an hour vs.  a gallon an hour and change my shirt two times a day instead  of four times a day. After a week in Madang for the PC conference, we took the  ship to Wewak and after two weeks there, we are returning to  Madang.  The trip to Wewak was good.  It was our first time  going out to meet deaf people specifically for the research  project.  Our contacts in Wewak were very helpful.  They  knew where many deaf adults and children lived.  They also  have a deaf club that is regularly attended by 5 deaf men.   We also found three other deaf men in Wewak on our own, and  got one of them to start coming to the deaf club.  We are  learning a lot as we go.  For example: adults are easier to  work with and have much better signing and communication  skills than children.  At first, I think we relied too much  on the family members.  We would ask the family for a sign  and the family would show us their sign instead of the deaf  person his or herself.  While this takes more time and work,  I think it will be much more productive.  Also instead of  working with a word list of desired words, we will need to  start working with pictures and picture stories. In Wewak, we stayed at a guest house on the college campus  by ourselves.  When we first came in there was an ant colony  living in one of the closets. We managed to kill them off,  but in the tropics it is nearly impossible to keep ants out.   So you just have to learn to live with them, especially in  the kitchen. "Hey cool! I got some extra protein in my  food."  And then there were the snakes!  One night we were  just hanging out by ourselves and, WHOA!  Intruder alert!   As it turns out, a four foot long python snake decided to  pay us a visit.  It was very cool, the snake was  blackish/grayish/ greenish and had an iridescent sheen.  We  took some pictures and went to bed.  It was gone in the  morning.  We purposely didn't tell anybody about it while  the snake was in the house because the Nationals would have  insisted on killing it.   Then there were these black wormy  things that were under the closet with the ant colony.  Now  that the ants were gone, they started going all over the  house. So, we caught one and it was really a snake!  A tiny  black snake with a blunt snout and tail.  So far we have  bats, ants and snakes.... I wonder what will be next? For the next week, we will be in Madang and then we will be  going back to Goroka after an absence of a whole month. Oh yes......another thing we learned during our conference  is that PC of PNG has decided not to place any more  volunteers in the Highlands for at least 2 years.  So that  means we are the last volunteers to be put in the Highlands.   Why the policy change?....Safety.  Ha!  When we first came  here the Medical Officer thought my hearing would be a  "safety issue".  Ironic, eh?  Well, that's all from Wild  Papua New Guinea. Ever Growing Family

Hello from Geneva, Switzerland!

Just thought I'd drop a circle-letter postcard from here. I was visiting a friend on the eastern side of France  (Strasbourg) and thought I'd make a trip to the beautiful  and grand country of Switzerland. I just got here and it's  about 7:30 p.m. so I haven't seen anything. I could have  gone to Zurich where Tony and Sally lived but I decided  upon Geneva because I understood that French was the  typical local language where as in Zurich it's German. Like  that I can continue to work on my French.  I have seen lake Geneva and it is very beautiful! CYBER-KNIFE SURGERY AT STANFORD

Dear Family, James is still doing great and will be scheduled for cyber-knife surgery by robot at Standford University  as soon as possible to get the last of the tumor next to the cortoroid artery. This is an amazing surgery that  wasn't available when he had the original surgery. We are so proud our baby has a Master's Degree. Think what you young parents have to look forward to  as you change the umpteenth diaper! Star and Jenifer have worked so hard to make this a reality it will be  wonderful for them to start cashing in and Star to have the pleasure of helping people more. I'm doing monotypes in my Wednesday class with the wonderful older ladies this summer and loving it  all the time. It is my sacred day to be with these inspiring 70 and 80 year olds. Last week it was over a  hundred degrees and my dearest favorite sprite brought us all tiny dixie cups, root beer, and fudge sundae  cookies serving us all making us feel so special. I felt the last earthquake here. My bed shook real hard and I thought our dog Puppy was scraching for a  flea unusually hard but when I felt for him with my feet at the foot of the bed and he wasn't there I knew we  were in trouble. At that time it came over the radio we were having an earthquake. About losing letters while composing them, I think if you click off the letter to do something else that is  when you come back and it is gone. If you do it in composer and then transfer it to the circle letter when  finished it is much safer because I made the same mistake a few times. 2001Family Reunion

Well, well, well, I bet everybody is getting excited over this little event  that will take place next June. Believe me it will come  sooner then you think. This will be the greatest 4 day party we have ever had,  since mom and dad were with us. You are right Mary, mom and  dad will have everybody in heaven looking down on this  blessed event. Just think of it, 400 relatives in one place? Well maybe only 200. In any event lets ALL get on the band  wagon, build the excitement and get behind the FAMILY  LOTTO to help make this the greatest event ever. As Sally has stated many times "it only takes $5.00 to get  in the Lotto". You all know what a great cause this is for. I have not heard any feedback on the addition of the  LaDuc's and Andersons to this party. Whats up. Remember  when we were all kids and how much fun we had with all of  our relatives when we used to go camping or just all got  together, heck lets do it again. What a party. Cyber Surgery Update

Hello Everybody, Just a quick note re: my brain surgery at Stanford Medical Center. My Cyber knife surgery is going forward.  I will be going down to Stanford on Wednesday October 11,  2000,  at 8:30 p.d.t.  I'll have a Cat scan (the most powerful Cat scan machine in the world) and be fitted for a Cyber  mask and then hopefully in a week or so I'll have between 3 and 5 radiation treatments and with luck this  benign tumor will become a big pile of scar tissue. Been reading some of the letter and lots of the excitement around Danny Wedding, the Family Reunion  lotto, the Family reunion, goings-on in PNG, Paris and other interesting places around the world. All this  excitement I love it!! Well I'm back from my little tour of the east of France and  Switzerland.  Wow, Geneva is beautiful....I think I could actually live  there. There is the most impressive water fountain that I  have ever seen right in the middle of the city.  It actually looks like a geyser that rises about 400 ft.  into the air. From some angles it can look like a big  waterfall flowing from the sky. Very beautiful!  The east of France was quite nice as well. I got to visit  with a girl Pascale that I met in London back in 1995 who I  had gone out with for a couple of weeks. It was a great  pleasure to see her.  To finish my tour I made a stop in a little town call Aix- Les-Bains and visited with another friend who I had met in  London way back then as well. It was a great trip! So, I came back and went to a party with some new friends  on Friday night and had the good fortune to ride with a guy  named Bruno that had given me a ride to and from the same  place (a different party) before. We had struck up a good  rapport before so it was cool to connect with him again. At  the end of the evening I had proposed to him that we have a  glass of beer or a coffee on my birthday and he agreed. The  day before my birthday I called him to confirm our meeting  and he informed me that he had to watch his little daughter  but that I should come over and we'd hang out at his place. I was thinking that it would just be him, his daughter, and  myself but he ended up maming a little party and inviting  several of his friends and he offered us all hors d'ouerves  and drinks......it was soooo great! Everyone was really  friendly and he made my first birthday in France quite  memorable. I was pretty surprised by his hospitality  considering that we'd only connected two times before.  Earlier in the day I had met with another new friend a  Parisienne artist named Isabelle who's art was recently  included in a very nice book of French artists. She ended  up giving me a copy of the book for a present....another  totally unexpected thing. Then the next evening the owner  of my appartment had a group of friends that we had met on  a big hike (kind of pilgrimage) of approx. 200 miles. Prior  to our reunion he had told everyone that we'd be  celebrating my birthday a bit as well (without me really  knowing that he was going to do that). As a result people  brought small gifts and wished me a happy birthday....it  was very fun! So, as you can see it was quite a nice birthday for  me...... more evidence of my success here in Paris. Ah, I've got more to add but I'm not at home and I have to  give up this computer. WE NEED LOTS OF PRAYERS!!!

Dearest Family, I just got through talking to Esther a few minutes ago and  it saddened my heart to hear about Jenny and Chris. They  are having a difficult time getting pregnant and you know  what that means...each and everyone of us have to start  praying and praying hard!!!  I think that Mom and Dad  (Grandma and Grandpa) need a little help with this one.  With the amount of people in our family and the great  amount of love that we have for each other, how could God  resist all of that? This family has been known to get a few  miracles over the years and we really need one now. Jenny  and Chris really need our support and with a gang like this  praying all at once who knows what could happen.  So when you read this letter of mine, please just take a  few minutes to say a little prayer for them during their  next few difficult weeks. Letter #19 from PNG

Letter #19 September 19, 2000 Hello Everybody, Well we are finally back in Goroka after exactly one month  of traveling.  I must say I think our trip was a success.   After the boat ride back to Madang we spent one more week  there.  It was in Madang that we met the most entertaining  deaf man.  He works as a security guard, a job for which he  is supremely qualified because he is a body builder.  The  man is quite large! He was excited to meet us, and shook my  hand so enthusiastically it felt like he was trying to rip  my arm off.  Physique aside, he is a great storyteller and  only uses home (made) signs and gestures.  He told us the  story of his life, growing up in a remote and poor area.   He and his brother started growing marjuana to earn money,  then they got busted, and then they escaped from the  police.  In retrospect it is a sad story but when he told  the story it was VERY funny.  Wow.  To meet a deaf man in a  third world country with no education who managed to find  work and maintain an incredibly positive attitude was just  so cool. I think it would be really cool if I could give  him a picture(s) of Lou Ferrigno (the Hulk). [Lou Ferrigno  is a deaf bodybuilder. –MRS] After two days in Madang we went about an hour and half up  the north coast and stayed with a man named Marcos and his  family.  Marcos is a CBR [I believe this is the acronym of  the German mission that funds the Mt. Sion Centre, where  Andy and Lynna work. –MRS] worker and has several deaf  clients.  We met two sets of deaf brothers and sisters.  It  went fairly well.  It is getting easier to interact and  communicate with these deaf villagers.  At first we were  relying a lot on family members to provide us with signs  and to interpret.  Now it is getting easier to interact and  get the deaf people themselves signing to us, which is much  better than relying on the family members.  I think the  next step is to create a series of picture flash cards and  use them to facilitate communication. Just down the road from Marco’s village is the Wasab  Ecotourism Project where another PC couple from our group,  Heidi and Jim are working.  We had visited Wasab for a  short afternoon during our early service conference.  This  time we stayed there two days.  The highlight of this trip  was a visit to an orchid garden maintained by one of the  local women.  When you think of orchid garden, what comes  to mind?  Nice neat little paths, wide swaths of clipped  green grass, flowers growing in neat little flower boxes,  perfect hedgerows, all laid out with Victorian precision?   Yes?  Well this garden was the complete opposite.  Like an  overgrown weed lot.  Everything grew where it pleased.  A  rough tangle of flowers, shrubs, and trees with the orchids  all mixed in.  You had to look for the orchids whether they  were up on a tree branch or coming out of a rotting stump,  and there they would be flowering in all the glory they  could muster.  It was awesome, it was akin to the first  time I saw a bald eagle or grizzly bear in the wild.  Which  is so much more exciting than seeing it in a zoo or the  artificial breeding ground of a garden.  Unfortunately  while we were there only about half a dozen orchids out of  several dozen were in bloom county.  The next day we were hoping to go bird watching, but we  were told it was the wrong time to see the birds. So  instead we went to Coconut Day at the nearby coconut and  cocoa research station.  There were five sing sing groups  and various politicians giving speeches.  We got free hats  and baskets made out of coconut palm fronds.  Then  unexpectedly there was a bizzen whipping ritual!  A half  naked man painted all black, except for his hair which was  dyed yellow walked into the crowd.  He was followed by four  regular men whom each held about a dozen switches of a  bamboo like grass.  The man in black would in dramatic  fashion, present his arms and chest to be whipped by the  four whip masters.  They would whip the black monster-like  man so hard that the cane rod would break with a horrific  snap, crackle and pop.  This is why they had so many whips;  they would break after one use. Like an initiation rite,  the man showed no pain. OUCH!  And then it was over and  they all just walked away. The next day we went back to Madang and then flew home to  Goroka.  We had been away for a whole month and it was nice  to just be out in our own house and get out of the heat.   Another crazy thing about this country is here we were  sweating our butts off on the coast and the morning after  we get back into Goroka happens to be the coldest we’ve  ever had.  It was so cold we could see our breath inside  the house! As for more craziness, the Goroka show is coming up this  weekend.  It tends to be the biggest sing-sing show in the  country.  I’ll be sure to tell you all about it in the next  letter.  Love ya all, Andy Hi All! Well, Andy has been doing such a good job of writing that  it has been too easy to just ok his letters and not write  much myself.  I am going to try to be better about  including a bit from me along with Andy’s letters as a few  of my friends have commented that they hardly know Andy but  most of what they read is from him.  But hey, I read the  letters too and just thought  “Yeah, what he said” But  still, I should stop being lazy, so here goes :). One thing Andy forgot to mention is that while in Wewak one  of the deaf men who attends the deaf club at the Teachers  College agreed to come to Mt. Sion to be a house parent for  the new Deaf Hostel!  His name is Ignus and he is a friend  of Tom Bristow who is the other American working with Mt.  Sion and on our research committee. Nothing is official  yet, but at least it is in the works.  Right now the deaf  kids at Mt. Sion share a hostel with the blind kids and the  house parents don’t sign, just gesture.  All of the kids  are delayed in varying degrees in their language  development.  If they have a deaf house parent who will be  singing and using gesture, place sign etc. all of the time  with them I think that will be the best thing we could do  for them right now.  Plus Ignus has had experience working  with Tom as a teacher’s assistant for deaf students in  Rabaul. He loves to teach and he knows a lot of Australian  sign, which is what the kids have been learning.  So, we  are very excited.  In case it is not clear, Andy and I are  not yet fluent enough in Australian signs to be good  language models (neither is anyone else) and we do not live  at the school.  At about the time the kids get out of their  unit class at the local primary school (off Mt. Sion  grounds) we are getting ready to head down to our house.  I  wish we lived on top for that reason, but there are no  houses available.  As for the children’s school, the deaf  unit class is taught in Australian Signed English.  The  kids don’t even have complete language of any kind and the  language at home is primarily Tok Pigon or Tok Place and  the teacher is trying to use exact English which has a lot  of grammar not found in Tok Pigon and worse many of the  signs used are conceptually inaccurate.  Something else to  work on and it will be easier when Ignus is here because he  will be the language model.  I am hoping he will be welcome  in the classroom, not just the hostel.  Though, don’t want  to work the poor guy to death!  I hope this is not too  boring to those on the list not in the field of deafness!?  Em Tasol Lukin Yu!  (That’s all, see you!) Bad News from PNG

October 7, 2000   Hello Everyone- We have some unfortunate news.  Due to safety and security  concerns the PC-PNG is removing all of its volunteers from  the five core Highlands provinces.  This means that Lynna  and I will have to leave Mt. Sion and Goroka by October  31.  The PC will most likely assign us a new site on the  coast or an island.  They have not yet found us a new site  but are looking into several possibilities. Two weeks ago the Regional Director of the Pacific/Central  & South America came to PNG for a visit to assess the  situation.  He told PC-PNG that they needed to come up with  some good justifications for keeping volunteers in the  Highlands.  When looking at available data of security  related incidents, trends in criminal activities  (frequency, and types), recent influx of automatic weapons,  incidents involving other volunteer and NGO organizations,  and number of PC volunteers quitting because of security  related incidents, the Country Director and the senior  staff made some hard decisions. She decided that instead of  waiting for something terrible to happen to a volunteer or  staff to pull the volunteers out of the Highlands now  before something happens.  They have also forbidden  traveling on the Highlands Highway for all volunteers. The Country Director and three senior staff came to Goroka  to inform us personally, which was very nice.  This also  allowed us to discuss our options for the future.  They  said that if we wanted to we could receive "interrupted  service," which means through no fault of our own we were  unable to finish our service and we can go home or start a  new two-year service in another country.  The other option  is to stay in PNG and go to a new site in country and still  leave as originally planned in April of 2002.  This second  option is the one that Lynna and I have decided to  pursue.   We met with our RCD (rural community development)  co-ordinator and program officers.  We told them that it  would be nice to continue working with the deaf, but we  really don't want to work with CBR (community based  rehabilitation).  They wanted to look into placing us in a  teachers college teaching special education, but we told  them, "no way."  We also emphasized that I am a forester  and working in conservation would be desirable, and that  Lynna would still like to do work with adult literacy and  women's groups. So for the next three weeks they are going  to be working hard to find us a new site.  Areas with  potential that were mentioned were the Rabaul area and  Kimbe area on New Britain Island, and the Madang area. So where does this leave the two of us now?  We are sad to  be leaving Mt. Sion and frustrated because we wondered if  this would happen from day one.  And now after working hard  for six months they are yanking us out. It is a bit  demoralizing.  I hope that our new site is a good one and  that we will be excited and motivated to work on.  Lynna and I agree with the Country Directors decision to  pull us out.  Just in the past two months three neighbors  or ours, all national women, have been robbed at knife  point near where we live.  It was just a matter of time  before something was going to happen, whether to us or  another volunteer. In the Goroka area an English volunteer  was carjacked and kidnapped by gun men and was quite shaken  up. The nature of the crimes has become more brutal-- rapes, beatings, torture, and killings. This is happening  to everyone, not just white people. Nationals too are  getting hurt. From now on if you want to send mail to us please send it  to the PC office in Port Moresby.  No need to stop sending  mail.  Then when we find out about our new site we will  inform you of the new address. Right now we are safe and being more cautious than ever.   Peace Corps has restricted us to using the Mt. Sion car for  travel to and from work each day.  We are no longer allowed  to walk on the road or travel on the PMV into town!  The PC  car is still here in Goroka and we can also arrange for the  PC driver to give us a lift when Mt. Sion can't.   Hey! It is all part of the Adventure! Letter #20 from PNG

10-3-00 Letter #20 Apinun Olgeta! (Afternoon all together = literal translation; Good evening  everyone = actual meaning) (Mixmasta bilong Jisas =  helicopter!) Boy, what a great show and eventful weekend. The Goroka  Show…much like the Women’s Cultural Show I mentioned before  only bigger, brighter, and wackier. Many different tribes  were decked out in their finest traditional costumes, and  some not so traditional. One group had a rainbow theme and  carried big rainbow-painted banners. They would have fit  right in at a parade in San Francisco (hmm…). One group I  liked was the Huli Wigmen, they wore big wigs made with  feathers and human hair. Another group I liked painted  their left side white and right side black, “the half men.”  Other interesting groups were: the bamboo band, who played  music by banging different sizes and lengths of bamboo on  the ground; the tight rope walkers, who walked across ropes  tied across the rivers (actually a skill taught to them by  the Australians); and so many more I can’t describe them  all. To truly understand you must come out here and see for  yourself (hint hint). Otherwise, you armchair travelers can  admire the pictures. During the show we stayed at another volunteer’s house at a  high school which was right across the street from the show  grounds. The volunteer that lives there had left town  because she had been to the show three times before and  didn’t want to experience the craziness again. There was  supposed to be another PC volunteer couple staying at the  house but they hadn’t shown up. Lynna and I spent most of the first day at the show. One  thing that I thought was just as amusing as the various  colorful groups were the hordes of camera-wielding  tourists. They looked just as strange as the nationals. That evening we went to the local resort to eat. There we  met a rather nervous Canadian volunteer and her daughter.  The two had just flown in from Port Moresby and were unable  to find their friends with whom they were supposed to stay.  So we told them they could stay with us. The second day I went back to the show again and paid for  the privilege to go into the inner circle where you can  take unobstructed close-up pictures of the groups. This was  like being on the stage of a play while it is in progress.  It seemed like only white people had the privilege of being  in the inner circle (money = privilege; who has the  money…?). The show wasn’t just about “sing-sing” groups and dressing  in traditional “bilas.” They had booths selling traditional  crafts, agricultural displays, displays of insects, boxing  matches, and local bands. Outside the show grounds were hundreds of young men trying  to get (sneak) in. When I went to leave the men were  bunched around the gate hoping to force their way in when  the gate was opened to let people out. Because I am one of  the “privileged,” a policeman stood guard at the gate with  tear gas in hand to prevent the crowd from mobbing the gate  and also threatening to gas anyone who might harass me as I  left. Then at 4:00 p.m. on the second day of the show the missing  PC volunteer couple unexpectedly showed up! “Um, don’t you  guys have some bags or something?” I asked them. “No, we got robbed.” They had nothing but the clothes on  their backs! The bus they were on was blocked and held up by a gang of  men with automatic assault rifles outside of Mt. Hagen,  took everything they had and searched them personally for  hidden money pouches. Fortunately they didn’t rape her or  any of the other women on the bus. Only problem now was we already had a full house. Blame  Canada! So I had to hurry up and take them to another  volunteer’s house before it got dark. Andy and Lynna to the  rescue again! Sure enough it got dark by the time we got to the other  volunteers house. Fortunately the other volunteer was able  to round up a car to take me back to the other house. In  the end, everything worked out. Everybody had a place to  stay, everyone enjoyed the show, and they all got away  safely. Let’s hope Lynna and I can say that a year and a  half from now when we leave. Hot potatoes, cold beer, and love,  Andy and Lynna 10-4-00 Notes from Lynna Today’s topic… Let me tell you about our 2 km walk to work each morning.  The first part is on a dirt road with rolling grassy hills  on one side and a shade coffee plantation on the other. The  coffee trees are shaded by towering bean trees of some  kind. When the coffee is in flower the trees are covered in  sweet smelling white flowers. We then leave the road for a  shortcut up a steep trail over the hills. During the wet  season, we sometimes must stick to the road as the steep  trail becomes too slippery (scientists searching for better  lubricants could benefit from a study of mud in PNG!). After that leg and lung-improving shortcut we rejoin the  road. Looking back we have a gorgeous view down into the  valley and of the low mountains on the other side, and the  river running between them. The road now goes through the  village of Kamaliki. Houses are primarily of bush materials  and there are many flowers, not to mention food plants,  trees, pigs, goats, chicken, children, and of course the  villagers. Everyone is very friendly and has a cheery  greeting for us. The next part of the walk is along the Highlands Highway.  The view is still great, but at times the shoulder is  narrow and giant trucks go by at high speed, spewing  exhaust fumes. We walk on trails off of the road whenever  possible. The Highlands Highway is on a ridge with the land  falling away into valleys on either side and then rising up  to mountains in the distance. Sometimes the valleys are so  filled with morning fog that the mountains look like  islands floating in the clouds (hence the name of a book  about travels in the Highlands of PNG). At this point we  are walking toward Goroka and the airport. We often get  close-up looks at the undersides of large aircraft  screaming in for a landing. When it is foggy even on the  ridge the planes fly much lower and you’d swear they were  going to land right there on the highway! The Mt. Sion  Campus and Resource Centre is located right next to the  highway and still about five kilometers out of town.  Avocado trees and lemon trees and one mulberry tree, plus  lots of flowers grow on the grounds. And there we are, time  to get to work, then do it all again at 4:00 pm. We do  sometimes get a lift. :) Lukim yu, Lynna - Monday, October 16, 2000 at 14:52:29 (PDT) Author: mattstevenson.geo@yahoo.com

HELP !!!!

Dear Family,   I write this letter to you all feeling a bit silly. JAMES SURGERY ON FOX NEWS 6.PM. WEDNESDAY OCT. 18, 2000

Aloha Family and Friends, James is going to have his first cyberknife surgery tomorrow at ll:30 a.m. at Stanford University with Dr.  Chang. It is planned to be shown on FOX news at 6:p.m. tomorrow. I'm sure they selected him because he is so  handsome, charming, funny, articulate, and special. The operation will take 2 hours. He will be operated  again on Thursday to get the very last of the tumor. Dr. Chang said everything looks great from the last  operation and he expects the ultimate success.  Thank-you Esther, Tom, and especially Scott for giving us this speedy communication to help us through  these trying times. It is so wonderful to know you will all be praying for us and sending us the best of good  wishes. It helps so much. I started crying writing this. It has been a tough year for us with the car accident in  Mexico and the return of the brain tumor. Our cell phone is working and we figured out how to use it but they won't allow it's use in the hospital. The number is    1 (707) 529-2939 We are going to stay in the van with Puppy and Muppy at Half Moon Bay Campground. They say James  will be fine afterwards, not dizzy or anything. The last time we stayed there we saw Dolphins cavorting in  the surf at sunset. Welp, I just spoke with my dad a few hours ago and he had  completely his first round of cyber-knife treatment....he was  on his way into center of town with my mom to have a  meal.....pretty amazing. He sounded great and said he was feeling normal.  He wanted me to tell everyone that the Fox broadcast will not  be today (I realize it's a little late for some of you). But  it will be TOMMORROW....I believe at the same time it was  supposed to be as indicated on the letter just before this  one. (6:00 on Fox news). James has come through great!....No broadcast...for awhile

Greetings Family! Well, great news! James has come through A-O.K. from the  latest operations!  When I asked him what it was like and if he ever felt  anything (like a warm sensation or something), he said that  he never felt anything.  He told me that in 3 months time his doctor will call for  another MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) Scan on his brain to  see the results of the operation. Apparently it takes some  time for the body to produce the scarring that replaces the  tumor that this operation generates. He'll probably add to  the letter later on today. As far as when the news report concerning this new technique  (featuring James) will be broadcast, it appears that it will  be some time next month. He'll find out when and let us know.  He says that there's a good chance that it will be shown on  CNN if not Fox News.  Uncle Jerry and Aunt Kelly, sorry to hear about Kelly's mom  and her current state. I hope that some peace will come to  her one way or the other soon. I wish you the best of success  on selling your house and buying another.....what dedication  to your kids!!! It will be nice to see you all in Maryland. OPERATION WENT PERFECTLY

10/20/2000 8:20 am PDT Hello all you lovely people in the Family Circle.      My brain surgery went perfect, I should know with 90 days the results after getting a MIR scan.     The interview with the Fox news (may also be shown on CNN) went great but will probally not air until mid November. My brain surgen Dr. Steven Chang looks so much like brother Gerry that I bought to the hostital a picture of all 12 sister and brothers and I 'm pretty sure that they well show the photo in the interview. I must leave for work now. Lyons Letter Part I - October 2000

Hello everyone, it's time for the long letter from the  LYONS clan... It's nice too read about all the new faces  that have joined the internet circle! First off I must say.... It's great to hear about what is  happening with you Uncle James, well not the part of  you needing the surgery in the first place, but the out  come!   "Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of  death, I fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and  Your staff, they comfort me." Psalm 23:4 I'm not familiar with the bible - AT ALL, but to find a  verse in the bible that can bring PEACE and comfort in  certain times of our lives is pretty cool, I think.  I'm so glad everything came out so successful and to see  the glory of this out come be given to the Lord is pretty  cool! Second I must say a little something about the Family  Lotto - it's great to hear about the money coming in.   Thank GOD that we have such a large family, or else there  would hardly be anything in it - meaning... come on you  guys... I heard that about only half  contribute on a  regular basis.  Which got me thinking... maybe there are  some misconceptions about the Lotto so here are some things  to think about....   --- Did you know that If you contribute only $5.00 a  month that it WOULD make a difference   --- Did you know that EVERYONE who attends the family  reunion weekend will BENEFIT from the money in the LOTTO  fund, whether you have contributed to it or not.   --- Did you know that if you inform Sally that you will  not be able to attend you could save her on postage.   --- Did you know that if you don't come it'll be such a  bummer -- cause you'll be soooo missed and it's going to be  SO MUCH FUN!!!!! Lyons Letter Part II - October 2000

Now on to the inside scoop about the  Lyons/Fitzgerald/Clemens crew -- I'll try and make this  short hahaha...  Well... jake's away at college, Western Michigan.  He hangs  out with Jordan Boudreau all the time, who attends  school there as well, along with Ben Stevenson, who he  doesn't see much. Natalie's dancing.   :o)     nothing different there,  except each year it's just bigger and better.  She'll be  adding a Pointe Ballett number to her list of competition  numbers, this year she'll be competing in 7 numbers...  YIKES!  But I love it!  She's also working in a co-op  program through the school - which works out great with her  dance schedule. Courtney is home from school for good (she was attending a  boarding school in Kentucky) and is doing good. she's   going to get a full time job and finish high school via  night school. Bobby is in high school at Catholic Central.  He's doing  great there --- he got a 3.5 on his first report card and  has all the Fathers there loving him, with his out going  personality and winning smile! Eric is also attending Catholic Central.  He had a good  first semester as well.  He played football on the freshman  team - there were 9 kids in his position so unfortunately  he didn't play much, but the team went undeafted.  There  were so many kids on the team that Eric (and Bobby) played  with from the little league football it made for a fun and  exiciting year.  I'm sure you'll be hearing big things from  this group of football players for the next 3 years. Jenni is also a freshman in high school and did awsome  her  first semester... well if you don't read her French grade,  but we are really proud of her.  Getting good grades  hasen't always been that easy for her.  She also is dancing  a lot more this year, competing 2 numbers and being an  alternate for 2 others. Luke is attending preschool and loving it.  He's 3 1/2 and  is at such a cute age - he's so funny. He loves Casey,  which is great, he could have been jealous, but isn't.  He  idolizes Bobby, everything bobby does he wants to do.  He  is sharing a room with Bobby, so Casey now has his own  room. I have to share one of many funny Luke stories - he  and Bobby were looking at a photo album and Bobby saw a  picture and said to Luke "hey look Luke, I used to do the  same thing when I was a baby"  and Luke said "Oh... when  Iza baby (I was a baby) I use to drink milk from my mommys  boob"  out of now where - probably funnier in person... Casey is my little cuddle bug.  Growing so fast and doing  so much, I'm convinced that I gave birth to a 3 month old.   He's is now 6 1/2 months old, he weighs a little over 24  pounds... (breaking my back!!!!) he's been able to sit on  his own for 3 months, he's been crawling for 2 weeks and  he's now pulling himself up and trying to get around, at  this rate he'll be driving next year.  He is totally  fasinated by Luke, follows him everywhere.  He's adorable,  loves the moonlight (meaning he doesn't sleep through the  night) and enjoys taking cat naps, loves to hear himself  sing and is well versed in letting us know what he wants...  already!!!  He adds a nice challenge to my ever growing  parenting skills :o)  He's going to be a monkey for  halloween - he will be soooo cute!!! okay I'll stop. Me... well I'm 30 pounds over weight, sleep deprived and  depressed, but other than that GREAT!  God continues to  bless us abundantly!!!!  (I'm kidding 'bout the depressed  comment) The last kid put me over the top (timewise) -- I  have no time for anything, in fact i shouldn't even be  writing this, It's taken me 3 Casey Naps to do this much, I  sat down to reconcile my check book , but got distracted...  I did join a Playgroup in my neighborhood every other week,  so now I get some adult companionship :o) with other moms.   It's fun - all but one of the moms, (she has 2 girls)  has  a  2 or 3 year old with an infant/1 year old BOYS. Luke  loves it and so do I  (casey looks like he likes it)  Someday I wish to include other fun things in my life, like  dieting and exercising. :o) Matt's doing great, still 'pounding the pavement' with his  new company.  He's 'moving dirt' on his bigger project,  meaning they've started getting the land ready for houses -  he's really excited 'bout this project, 370 homes, with a  park, clubhouse and pool. He wants to build 'community'  type sub-divisions.  Bringing back the community type  neighborhoods - It's really nice.  Did I mention that he  got another Harley...? so he's been having a lot fun with  that toy -- if you want to call it a 'toy'.   so that's it -- I think. read about you soon - i hope and hope to see you all soon! love, nancy - Monday, October 30, 2000 at 10:39:36 (PST) Author: lyons10@msn.com

Counting down 'til wedding day

Hello Everyone, Jenny here.  Just a few weeks left until Dan and Jill tie  the big knot, and we can't wait. We are all very busy here preparing for their big day.  In  fact, we are very excited about the entire weekend.  We are  missing a few addresses, if anyone can help we'd greatly  appreciate it.  Here's who we need: Matt, Beth, and John Hussey Jimmy Boudreau James & Chitomi Stevenson Steven Hull I think that's it, but I'll double check the list to make  sure no one is forgotten. Stevenson's of Plymouth Update

Here's a brief update from Tommy/Jeanne and crew. Our house addition is really coming along. We are in the  drywall phase and hope to be done with the project and  "moved in" to the new section by end of November.  We  expanded the kitchen and added a second floor master  bedroom, bath and laundry room.  We are really excited about  it!  It's been a zoo, but we are seeing the preverbial light  at the end of the tunnel. The kids are doing very well LOVING their new school as  are we! Today is their All Saints festival, the kids K-6  dress up as their favorite saint and after mass they had a parade and told which Saint they were dressed as.  They were  so cute! It was a great way to learn about some of the  Saints. Sophie was St. Therese - the little flower and Carly  was St. Bernadine.  Jeanne made their costumes, where she  finds the time who knows, they looked great.  Sophie was so  proud! The 7-8 graders then put on a party for the younger  kids after lunch. I wish I was back in school. The new Plymouth school (where Carly is going will be  complete this next week and all are excited to be in their  new building).  Sophie will stay in the School at Dominos  Farms as there is no 6th grade at he new school yet. Dillon is having his Halloween party at pre-school today, he  can harldy wait - he is going as Superman - (hurray for  PJ's). We are ramping up for Danny's wedding, hope to see many of  you there and are VERY excited for the family reunion. Hope  to see ALL of you there! Letter #21 from PNG

Letter #21 October 25, 2000 Greetings from afar, Well, we are still in Goroka for the moment. We will be  leaving next Thursday for Madang (Beach Time!) We will be  staying there temporarily while the Peace Corps office  staff looks for a new site placement for us. Right now they  are looking into possibilities in Rabual and the Sepik  areas where we would be working in conservation, women’s  groups, income generation and social development. However,  things can change pretty fast around here and we could be  going someplace completely unexpected. (What? We’re going  where?   Xanadu? Is that where the men still wear penis  gourds?) So, you’re wondering, what’s up with this whole safety and  security thing? Why were we put in the Highlands only to be  yanked out now? Well, it’s a little complicated, but here  goes. In general, the Highlanders are more violent people  than the Coastal people but in my opinion the whole PNG  culture is violent. In the past, the different tribes would fight each other  with spears, bows & arrows and machetes. Every once in a  while someone would get hurt or someone would die. It was  mostly a tit for tat kind of fighting. When the Australians  came, they tried to put an end to it. When the Australians  left after independence, the National Police tried to stop  it but it still continues. Now, with the proliferation of  cheap automatic weapons on the worldwide black market, some  of the tribes have been able to afford to buy these guns  for the tribal fighting. So now, a lot more people are  dying. Another thing is that crime in general is on the  rise. In the past, the rascals (robbers) couldn’t stop and  rob a vehicle with bows & arrows and machetes but with  automatic weapons, they can and do. This makes traveling  anywhere by road a lot more dangerous. This is why travel  on the Highlands Highway is now forbidden. I hear first and  second hand accounts of highway robberies each week and  read about more in the papers. A bunch of other factors that come into play are the  problems of a developing and changing society.  When there were no cities in PNG, everyone was a  subsistence farmer and hunter. With the advent of western  contact, money, cars processed food, education, health  care, religion and rich expatriates, there was bound to be  a lot of social problems and turmoil. Essentially, this  culture has gone from the Stone Age to the Information Age  in a very short period of time. One of the big problems is  with the education system that turns out graduates with a  western style education. They want jobs in the city that  pay good money but there are no jobs to be had. How many of  them want to go back to their villages and raise coffee?  Not many. As result, the cities and villages have lots of  high school graduates and their families that feel cheated,  especially because they had to pay all their school fees.  Unfortunately, schooling is not free in PNG. So here you  have a lot of frustrated people with no work, who don’t  want to go back to their villages, so, they resort to  crime. If they get in trouble with the police, then they go  back to their village where the wantoks protect them. And  who are their targets? Everyone. Most often though, it’s  the people who have money, which includes Lynna and me. Many of the crimes are becoming more brutal. Several weeks  ago in Mt. Hagen, three nurses in a hospital car were  stopped and gang raped. In another incident, a group of men  cut through a fence at a high school, drove a car in,  kidnapped several students and raped them. A convent here  in Goroka was broken into and a nun was kidnapped and  raped. There are many more stories similar to this, all in  the last two years. Why don’t the police do something you  ask? Well, it’s a third world country, they are  understaffed, under funded, under equipped, under trained,  and sometimes, too scared to go after the criminals. I hate to say it, but violence is a part of the culture  here. Since we have been here (less than a year) I have  seen more fist fights between adults than I have in my  entire life. I have seen so many women with broken arms and  banged up faces. Parents smack their children. Children hit  other children and it is allowed. It’s crazy, but it  happens. So why were Lynna and I placed in the Highlands to begin  with?  Originally, they weren’t planning to put any members of our  group in the Highlands. An exception was made for Lynna and  me because the unique opportunity to pair our skills with  Mt. Sion was such a nice fit. Also, Goroka was considered  safe compared to the rest of the Highlands. At the time of our placement, the PC Country Director was  new and had not yet had time to fully analyze the safety  and security situation in the Highlands. Once she realized  that it was quite bad, including Goroka, she made the  decision to pull us all out. She said she wouldn’t be able  to live with herself if any of us got hurt. Even before this, Lynna and I wouldn’t go out much and just  do stuff, like a hike or a Public Motor Vehicle ride (PMV)  to another town. We would just stick around the house and  get cabin fever. In efforts to combat cabin fever, I  started working on our garden a lot more and also working  out at the gym a lot. The local priest, Fr. Bogden, moved his gym equipment out  of his garage to the community center and opened it up to  the locals. One day Fr. Bogden told me in private that most  of the men who work out in the gym are rascals. That was a  good motivator to keep me in the gym. I would rather have  them look at me and think, "that white man, he is a cool  cat. He can bench press 100kg" rather than, "that white  man, he is a fat cat. I bet he got K100 in his pocket." Then one day, Brother Moses and I were visiting a disabled  child in a village outside of Goroka. After we finished, we  walked to the highway to catch a PMV back into town. At the  highway there was a police blockade for searching vehicles  (PNG doesn’t have a 4th Amendment). Moses and I hadn’t  caught a bus yet when the police offered us a ride back to  town (kid glove treatment!). There were seven of them in a  ten seat Land Cruiser. As soon as we got in, they received  a call that a car was robbed up the highway so off they go  with us in tow. As soon as we got to the scene of the  crime, four of them dashed after the rascals with guns a  blazing or rather the gun a blazing (they only had one gun  among them) and chased them up the mountain. After 15  minutes, they came back empty-handed so we started back to  town again.  Just as we got under way, another call came in  to apprehend a known rascal who was spotted at the town  market. Again, off we go at break neck speed down the bumpy  highway and come to a screeching halt at the market where  all seven of the cops pile out of the Cruiser, pounce on  the unsuspecting rascal and proceed to beat the shit out of  him and manhandle him into the car (no 14th amendment here  either). Moses and I barely had time to jump out of the car  before the cops threw the rascal in where we were sitting.  So here I am, having just jumped out of the police car  where they have just apprehended a rascal. Everybody  thought it had something to do with me, that I had been  robbed or something. There was a large crowd of people  looking at me. This time I refrained from doing a song and  dance. Hi everybody! This is Leah Lou. I haven't written in this  letter in so long. Everything has been going good with me.  Let's see whats new.....well Jd and I are still going  together. It's been almost 1 year and 7 months!!!!:)Yep  he's awesome. I'm still doing pom pon. As a matter of fact  I just attended a competition at Saginaw Valley State  University. We took 3 routines with us: Highkick, Pom funk  and Jazz lyrical. Mellissa French was there, her team got  first place in highkick. (my team didn't even place) But we  wont go there! L.O.L. School is okay even though I can't  stand it the majority of the time. My G.P.A is a 3.0, I  could be doing better, I'm trying. Well I hope all is good! Letter # 22 from PNG

Hello Folks, We are at the Pacific Heritage Foundation (PHF) offices on  the eastern end of New Britain Island. My new assignment will be working in eco-forestry. This  will involve going out and working with different landowner  groups to help them manage their forests. Lynna will be  working with community and women's development. One of her  projects will be to work on a children's book about the  forest and the environment. PHF is located on a coconut plantation about 15 kilometers  inland. We have a house, but it needs some work before we  can move in. For the time being, we are staying with  another volunteer named Michael Jackson (HONEST)! Our first few days here have been quite exciting. While we  were on the plane coming over here, Rabual was hit by a 7.2  earthquake. Two hours after we landed, another 6.8  earthquake hit the region. There have been numerous  aftershocks...about two dozen a day now for three days. So  this is a really rocking place!! There was a small tsunami  (tidal wave) but it did not affect Lynna and me at all. The  worst damage has been to the water tanks, many of them  bursting and falling over. There have also been land slides  over the roads. Few, if any, buildings have fallen over. We  are perfectly safe and in good spirits. Stays so full, never empties, as you make your way, from  rooftop to rooftop, to homes large and small, from nation  to nation, reaching them all?  And Santa smiled kindly and  said to the boy, don't ask me hard questions.  Don't you  want a toy?   But the child shook his head, and Santa could see, that he  needed the answer.  Now listen to me, he told the small boy  with the light in his eyes, my secret will make you sadder,  and wise.  The truth is that my sack is magic.  Inside it  holds millions of toys for my Christmas Eve ride.  But  although I do visit each girl and boy, I don't always leave  them a gaily wrapped toy.  Some homes are hungry, some  homes are sad, some homes are desperate, some homes are  bad, some homes are broken, and children there grieve.   Those homes I visit, but what should I leave?   My sleigh is filled with the happiest stuff, but for homes  where despair lives, toys aren't enough.  So I tiptoe in,  kiss each girl and boy, and I pray with them that they'll  be given the joy, of the spirit of Christmas, the spirit  that lives, in the heart of the dear child who gets not,  but gives.  If only God hears me and answers my prayer,  when I visit next year, what I will find ther are homes  filled with peace, and with giving, and love and boys and  girls gifted with light from above.  It's a very hard task,  my smart little brother, to give toys to some, and to give  prayers to others.  But the prayers are the best gifts  indeed, for God has a way of meeting each need.  That's  part of the answer, the rest, my dear youth, is that my  sack is magic.  And that is the truth.   In my sack I carry on Christmas Eve day, more love than a  Santa could ever give away. The sack never empties of love,  or of joys, cause inside it are prayers, and hopes.  Not  just toys.  The more that I give, the fuller it seems,  because giving is my way of fulfilling dreams. And do you  know something?  You've got a sack, too.  It's as magic as  mine, and it's inside of you.  It never gets empty, it's  full from the start.  It's the center of lights, and of  love, it's your heart.  And if on this Christmas you want  to help me, Don't be concerned with the gifts 'neath your  tree.  Open that sack called your heart and share, your  joy, your friendship, your wealth, your care.  The light in  the small boy's eyes was glowing.  Thanks for the secret,  I've got to be going.  Wait, little boy, said Santa, don't  go. Will you share?  Will you help? Will you use what you  know?  And just for a moment the small boy stood still,  touched his heart with his small hand and whispered, I will. - Sunday, December 03, 2000 at 17:38:04 (PST) Author: kmccann@san.rr.com

Welcome to the fascinating world on the internet! It is so great when a new member of the family adds to  the Circle Letter. It makes us all feel so connected to each other and is the only way we can have some idea of  what is going on in this great big clan. We missed you at the wedding. Everyone had a great time and we had good weather. The young boys  and girls in the family are growing up so fast and they all are good looking.  Scott came from Paris to Zip and Liz's in L.A. for Thanksgiving and then on to the wedding and then  home to Paris. Star came for Thanksgiving from Davis so it was nice being with part of our family  and have a  delicious dinner with Zip and Liz, her brother Carl and several of their friends. While we were there Sheryl Crow had Zip's company do a pair of vintage Levis with studs and jewels  which she wore to give an award on The Billboard Show in Las Vegas. Next one of the U2 band members is  having a vintage jacket studded in copper and aged silver studs to wear on the cover of Rolling Stone soon. Many of the publicity photos for the movie Charlie's Angels shows them wearing his studded pants and in the  movie Drew Barrymore has on one of jeweled jackets while she is driving a convertible with the other two  stars. You only see it very briefly if you know where to look. Liz has started an antique resale business with a booth in a wonderful antique store in Century City. She  loves antiques so this is a perfect fit for her.  Their girl Sophie is talking up a storm in Japanese and English and busy every minute. She really took to  Grandpa but she mostly told me No! No! No!  Liz said she did the same thing to her Mother when she visted  for  a month from Japan earlier this year. Liz said her mother was so glad to hear she wasn't the only one. A study of the "TOOTH FAIRY" 

Hello everybody, Below is a very funny article on the “Tooth Fairy” sent to Suzanne and I by Scott. I have changed it a little  to make it Americanized.  (Adrian Barnett is  English) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------   A brief exercise in critical thinking by Adrian Barnett 1997    “THE TOOTH FAIRY” Here, we shall study an apparently supernatural phenomenon and attempt to draw conclusions about it's validity. It is assumed that the reader is intelligent, rational and open-minded enough to draw his/her own conclusions from this discussion. Premise The Tooth Fairy is a common childhood myth. It is usually defined like this:  When a tooth falls out, leave it under your pillow when you go to sleep. During the night, the Tooth Fairy will visit your room, take the tooth  and leave a small amount of hard cash.  Going on the empirical evidence, this appears to be a good hypothesis. As a child, when my teeth fell out I would tell my parents, and they would tell me to put the tooth under my pillow. In the morning, the Tooth Fairy  had indeed been there, and I was a quarter (25 cents) better off.  Investigation It never occurred to me to do a few controlled experiments. Such  experiments could be:  Tell your parents a tooth has fallen out, but do not put it under the pillow.  Tell them a tooth has fallen out, when in fact it has not.  When a tooth falls out, put it under the pillow, but do not tell your parents.  When a tooth falls out, do not tell your parents, and put the tooth in a  different location instead.  Put something other than a tooth under the pillow.  Stay awake all night to see what transpires.  All these experiments would provide a wide range of empirical evidence that may then be used to postulate a theory. It should be noted, however, that the last one (stay awake and see what happens) should be tried first. This will invariably (but perhaps not always) show that it is in fact your parents, and  not a supernatural entity, that removes the tooth and leaves money in it's place.  Another procedure is to attempt to deduce the properties of the Tooth Fairy,  should it actually exist (after all, you may not be able to stay awake  all night  to catch your parents at it).  Deductions So, what can we deduce about the Tooth Fairy, from its known characteristics. It is not affiliated with any known religion, in the way that Santa Claus and  the Easter Bunny are associated with Christianity (although their origins  seem to predate Christianity). Therefore, it is presumably not be restricted to  visiting Christian children. This gives it a much greater range than Santa Claus.  It does not need to visit all children in one night, once per year (as Santa Claus does). It may eventually visit all children, but it takes place at  irregular, infrequent intervals.    It is possible to predict the number of visits per child by the average number  of teeth per child.  The amount of money left per tooth varies according to the child's age.  This is reasonable, as younger children are less interested in money than older children.  The amount of money left per tooth also varies according to the level of income of the parents. This suggests that it either unfairly favors wealthy  families, or it does not wish to encourage poverty stricken parents to use their  children's teeth as an alternate, tax-free source of income.  It is able to detect the loss of a tooth. There are several possible explanations for this. The parents contact the Tooth Fairy when they hear of the loss. The Tooth Fairy actually does visit each child every night, just in case. Some form of radiation or exotic particle is emitted on the loss of a tooth. We shall call these "Toothions". The Tooth Fairy is able to detect this radiation (or particle stream).  To investigate this properly would require placing a child in a large particle  detector and removing it's teeth, measuring any emitted radiation/particles. Nuclear Physics research centers, such as CERN should be contacted about this sort of  experiment (also, the parents should be notified).  It has almost unlimited funds. Individually, each child's "reward" is quite  small, but the overall cost per year must be enormous. It is able to carry with it vast quantities of coins (of different currency) and teeth. (it has been proposed by Pratchett et al that if the Tooth Fairy does not have the correct change, it may extract the appropriate amount of teeth to ensure a fair trade).  It is acutely aware of all current monetary exchange rates.  It can travel at relativistic speeds (i.e. nearing the speed of light).  It has the ability to enter and leave locked houses at will, without being  detected by burglar alarms, security systems, dogs etc.  Some of the above items can be explained if there is an army of Tooth  Fairies,and not just one.  Questions raised Other questions that are raised are: What, exactly, does it do with all those teeth? Possibilities are:  Building materials.  Jewelry.  Mineral extraction.  Sinister medical experiments, possibly in collusion with the CIA.  Sold on to third parties.   Possibly the chinese traditional medicine market (investigations should  be done into the aphrodisiac/healing properties of ground child-tooth).  Also,  assuming that you do indeed stay awake all night, and actually do see the Tooth Fairy, it becomes necessary to address these issues:  Could it have been a dream or an hallucination brought on by lack of  sleep, and the expectation of seeing such an entity?  Is there third-party evidence to support the visitation theory?  Did you install video recording apparatus?  Do you have a history of mental illness?  Are you taking strong medicinal/recreational drugs?  Is there physical evidence remaining, such as fairy dust, ectoplasm,  or fragments of wing scale?  Have you ruled out the possibility of fraud/hoaxing by third parties?  Summing up Having studied the above evidence and arguments for and against  the existence of the Tooth Fairy, the critical thinker should now be in a position to apply Occam's Razor and select the simpler explanation.  Creation Scientists should note that the simpler (and, in this case, correct) explanation is: "It's the parents doing it." It's not really a fairy.                                                                                                                                                                                                             - Saturday, December 16, 2000 at 10:45:47 (PST) Author: sunshine@sonic.net

A Wish for Happy Holidays to All with Love from Paris!

Hopefully everyone is doing well wherever you might be! Wow, time definitely flys faster as you get older eh? This will be my second holiday season here in Paris. Last  year I had the good fortune of spending Christmas and New  Year's with a good friend. It was then that I decided to come  and live here. I suppose those who've been reading this  letter since then will remember my posts....and of course  ...they're easy enough to go back and read.  What a wonderful Thanksgiving I shared with some of the  family in Los Angeles at Zip and Liz's house. It felt good to  be amongst family on Thanksgiving to see my parents and to  see my niece Sophie (Zip and Liz's daughter). She sure is  growing up big and strong! Then afterward Danny and Jill's  wedding in Maryland. That was such a pleasure to attend. I  enjoyed talking with the Coppock's and catching up with other  family members who were lucky enough to make it to their  wedding. To Danny and Jill, may you have long and healthy  lives together! I thought the words you two said about your  parents were really touching.... I'm thankful to live in such a family filled with love and  tenderness.  I'm looking forward to this new year. There will be many  things going on this year particularly with a new  administration in the white house. I hope Bush becomes adept  in world politics! Letter #23 from PNG

Letter #23 January 9, 2001 Hello Everyone Well we have finally settled into our new site. It certainly  has been and interesting 2 months, so this is bit of a long  letter.  I plan to start writing my letters more regularly  now. We were in Madang for two weeks in early November, which was  great. We hung out up with a bunch of CUSO (Canadian)  volunteers, went snorkeling, I played squash, and watched  the Presidential election saga (the Canadians had CNN).   One night we were invited to go for a run with the Hash  House Harriers (H3).  This group is an anachronism left over  from the colonial days.  Back in the days when there were  lots of Aussies around, they were getting fat from lack of  exercise, so they started a running club. However at the end  of the run they always ended up at the “hash house”. Thus  they became know as the Hash House Harriers.  This group is  primarily made up of either, runners with a drinking  problem, or drinkers with a running problem (mostly  Australian men).   First we all went for a run around town  and then back to a central meeting spot for a BBQ and  drinking session.  First, the Captain put on his captains  jacket and lorded over a club meeting.  In the meeting  anyone who had committed a trivial offense of any sort was  punished by requiring them to chug a whole beer at once.   And any one who had done good deed was rewarded giving them  a beer to chug all at once!  As a result just about everyone  was punished or rewarded (at least it was a home brewed  beer), including Lynna and myself for the honor of being  guests. There is a special ritual that must be followed for  these rewards and punishments.  There is a special mug with  which to chug the beer.  The mug has a handle that is shaped  in the likeness of a flying fox bat.  There is a hole in the  cup, which drains out of the anatomically much too large  penis of the bat.  Therefore while chugging the beer one has  to be careful to keep a finger over the tip of the bat’s  penis while chugging the beer.  However before one can chug  the beer the special beer chugging song must be sung first.  To ensure that one has fully drained the mug one must tip  the mug upside down over their head.  It was good silly fun  and a great way to drink beer.  The ritual reminded me of my  fraternity days, instead of a silly little ritual that was  taken seriously, this silly ritual was used to make fun of  themselves and also have some fun while doing it. After two weeks in Madang we flew out to East New Britain  Province to go to our new site near the provincial town  called Kokopo.  Peace Corps had arranged for us to stay at a  beachside guesthouse for a week while our new house was  fixed up.  When the plane landed we found out that there had  just been a major earthquake an hour before.  Two hours  after we landed while we were at the guesthouse a second  major earthquake hit.  Lynna and I stood in the doorway of  the guesthouse.  The quake was so strong that we had to hold  on to the doorframe to keep our balance.  The house next us  had a solar water heater that fell off the roof and crashed  not ten feet from us.   There was some confusion as to how  strong the quakes were. The numbers I have heard that both  were measured at 8.0 and one aftershock at 7.2.  So this was  a pretty big geological event!  The quake was caused by a  sub-duction fault deep in the crust. It had nothing to do  with the volcano nor did it affect the volcano.   Because of a tsunami warning (the earthquake was under the  sea), Peace Corps had us move to another volunteer’s house,  who lives away from the coast.  We stayed there for a week.   A small wave (5ft) did hit the wharf and flooded a few  warehouses.  Surprisingly the quakes did not cause massive  damage.  Most of the damage was to water tanks that either  burst or fell off their blocks and to some roads that were  covered by landslides.   Even now a month and a half after the big quakes we feel  aftershocks everyday.  Most are mild tremors, but every now  and then a good jolt will startle us. Such as the one that  happened while Lynna was on a ladder!  These jolts can be  more than 6.0 in strength. And of course there is the volcano… the one that buried  Rabaul, the former provincial capital.  Rabaul was not the  largest city in PNG, but it was most vibrant city in PNG.   In 1994 two volcanoes erupted near Rabaul spewing mostly  heavy ash.  One of them buried most of the town under  several feet of ash. The town was evacuated and over the  next several months ash fall slowly buried the town.  The  capital was moved to another town, Kokopo, on the other side  of the bay, which is safe from the volcanoes.  Since the  main eruption the volcano will periodically erupt and belch  out ash.  About six months ago it started up again and  lasted for about 5 months.  So when we arrived here two  months ago, we were greeted by, a major earthquake, an  erupting volcano, and a minor tsunami!  In the past few  weeks the volcano has calmed down considerably.  While it  looks awesome when it is erupting, it is nice when it is not  because sometimes the wind blows the ashes across the bay  where we live and there will be a fine layer of dust all  over everything, our skin, clothes, inside the house,  everywhere! And what about our new house?  Well when we first moved here  it was not ready for us to move into yet.  PHF had to put  locks on the doors and a wooden lattice over the windows in  order to meet PC's minimum-security requirements before we  could move in.  After we moved in they continued to work on  the house.  We told them that if we were going to live there  for a year and half we would want it screened in, not only  for privacy but also because of the flies and mosquitoes.   So they screened in all the windows and verandas. They have  yet to replace the sak-sak (sago palm leaf) roof, although  they have started on sewing up the sak-sak leaves.  For the  time being, the roof is covered by a huge tarp.   Despite the work it needs, it is really a beautiful house.   It is up on 2ft. high posts, with wooden floors, an peaked  roof ceiling that goes up 25ft and is very open, two  bedrooms, bathroom with shower, toilet, sink. It does have  electricity, propane stove, and a refrigerator.  The front  of the house is like a big open porch where the living room  and kitchen is.  Four posts at the entrance of the house  have traditional carvings on them.  The house is surrounded  by frangipani trees which are in continuous bloom giving off  a very nice sweet smell. Once the roof is replaced it will  be just beautiful.   What exactly are we doing?  Good question, I am not exactly  sure!  Well Lynna is working with the Women's Desk and I am  working with the Forestry Desk.  The Women's Desk goes out  to the various project sites and helps women set up sewing  projects and baking projects, health awareness, basic  bookkeeping, etc…  Of the two women who work at the desk,  one just had a baby, and the other is 9 months pregnant, so  needless to say, not too much will be happening there for  awhile.   As for myself, I am working with the forestry desk  areas     Right now I doing a lot of reading trying to learn  as much about eco-forestry in PNG as I can.  Eventually we  should be going on patrols to visit existing projects to  make sure the project is going well, help solve problems,  and teach them more about forest management.  Unfortunately  not much is happening in the office in general.   Our General Manager and Head Forester just resigned last  week.  So it looks like I will have to play a greater part  in the forestry desk.  As a volunteer my job is not to  manage or make decisions but to train and advise.  However,  seeing as that my counter parts have little management and  decision making skills it will be up to me to “guide” them.   How is it that myself as a volunteer with very little  experience can step in and help people that have much more  experience to make decisions and manage a program?  I hate  to say this but I think that Papua New Guineans still  influenced by the colonial days when the “white masta” made  all the decisions and told the nationals what to do.  This  has handicapped the nationals in to thinking that they  should defer to the white man and in the process of always  deferring to the white man the nationals have not developed  thier own management and problem solving skills.  It doesn’t  help that PHF was founded and run for five years by a white  man with an autocratic leadership style.  Hopefully I can  undo some of the damage and teach these guys simple  management and problem solving skills and they will be all  set because they already have all technical skills they need  really.  The office is located on the plantation of the founder of  PHF. The plantation is located about 10km inland from  Kokopo.  Our house is next to the plantation owners house  who.  Right now he is ill and has moved to Australia.   The plantation grows copra (coconut) and cocoa, the cocoa  trees are grown underneath the coconut trees. There are also  several stands of balsa wood trees on the plantation.  Yes it is hot here, but at least the office is  air-conditioned.  The trees from the plantation provide a  lot of shade so it is not too bad.  At night it does cool  off and we are able to sleep comfortably. January 21, 2001      Hello Everyone!! It is time to give an update since  our last contribution to the family site at Christmas.  Since then, we have sold our home and we are buying a condo  in Waterford about 2 miles from here. It is 10 years old.  No steps!!!! It should work well for us but it will be half  the size of our home now. We hope to be moving sometime in  February. I wanted everyone to know that God blessed us  again with a prize of a trip to Honalulu, Hawaii from March  3to 11th. I won it on a radio contest in Detroit on station  WOMC. This has been a dream come true for us and we are  soooo excited. We will be staying at the Hyatt Regency  Resort on the Beach of Waikiki. We hope to be moved before  the trip. Once we have our new phone and address we will  forward it to everyone. Our boys are doing good. Jeff is  full time as a camp couselor and will hopefully be going to  college full time in the fall. He has been hired by  Waterford Schools as the head coach of wrestling for  Waterford Pierce Middle school too. He has a sweet  girlfriend who also works part time at the camp and we had  dinner with her and her folks at Mesquite Creek last  friday. Neat people!! Ben is not currently in a play and he  has a pretty full load this semester but he'll get through  it!! He and Melissa have taken a hiatus from each other but  have not broken up. Kelly's Mom is holding her own. Her bed  sores are healing up well and Kelly's Aunt Bobbie is  destined to become a saint for all her wonderful Love and  care for Mom. Well we're off to a family reunion meeting at  Lucca's. Hope you can all come to the reunion and PLEASE  don't forget the lottery that Sally has been running to  raise money for the reunion. Much Love to you all!!! Gerry  and Kelly - Sunday, January 21, 2001 at 10:24:04 (PST) Author: gerryandkelly@aol.com

Hi to my family. This letter is really directed to Scott. It seems that  Kelly cannot get into the web site since she got rid of  RoadRunner. When she types in the family address it tells  her it is not a good address. Bob...  AN OFFICIAL COUNT!!!

Hello Family.. A few days ago I mailed out a letter to the out-of-town  brothers to ask who from their family will be coming to the  reunion...We need an official count A.S.A.P. but for  everyone IN town if you want to send Aunt Janie your  response also that would be great... CRUIZIN32@aol.com is  her address and let her know... We had a VERY fun meeting  at Aunt Sal's last Sunday and the excitement is BUILDING!!! Thoughts on Games at the Reunion

Hello, Just had a few thoughts on the games for the reunion.  We  could have a Bacci Ball tournament.  Water ballon toss for  the little kids. Bobbing for apples, potato sak races, or  human wheelbarrel races.  There could be a section at the  reunion where there are board games set up for anyone to  play at any given time.  It would be fun to have families  against other families playing pictionary and again make it  a tournament. These are just a few.  I know I am at a disadvantage by not  being able to participate locally, but if I can do anything  to assist in the planning or sending R.S.V.P. notices or  calling anyone, please do not hesitate to let me know.   It might be fun to have each individual family come up with  there own theme/idea for the T-shirts, and turn that into a  contest.  Having a few individuals to judge each family on  that Saturday.  Maybe there could be a small incentive for  the best.   Hope everyone is doing great.  I know everyone says this,  but I am so very excited for the reuion.  It can't come  soon enough!                         Love You All                           Kelly - Thursday, February 01, 2001 at 21:58:48 (PST) Author: Mccannk11@aol.com

"T" Shirts

Well, First I read Mary's letter and then I felt bad. But then I  read Kelly's letter and really felt bad. I just cannot believe that we all cannot respond to  something as important as this great party we will be  holding in June. Well, I am not being prejudice but I really like Kelly's  idea about T-Shirts and having a judging contest to see who  may have been the most creative. I would like to see who is in favor of this idea. Either  way we all must have t shirts on Saturday and I promise  that there will be a deadline of March 1st. to either bring  your own or have Mary get them from her guy. Already being into February the time is starting to move  quickly. It might not be a bad idea if we do offer a small  incentive to some of the games we will play. Sort of like a  STEVENSON OLYMPICS. Mayby moreso for the younger kids but  make it special for them. Swimming contest, running  contest, relay contest. For us older guys we could have a joke telling contest,  clean jokes only, and if you want to make things really  difficult we could have a prize for the best Stevenson  family story, to be judged by the nieces and nephews. One of the other important things is keeping Andy and Leine  informed either by pictures or by vidioes, if they have any  way of watching them. I feel like a kid waiting for Santa to come to our party. Lets start keeping in touch much more frequently. T-Shirts? We Doan Need No Stinkin T- Shirts

JUST KIDDING! I just couldn't resist saying it : ) I think T-Shirts are a great idea. I like the individual  family design idea. Although their are some who may not  feel they have the creative bent to make them up, to that I  say, "Posh and Fie on you"! That's what would make it fun;  seeing what everyone can come up with. I haven't seen mention of a horseshoe tournament in any of  the games. I hope that will be included. Nancy and I are going to Australia in late May to visit  Andy and Lynna. We will have lots of pictures to  show everybody. So far their new assignment sounds a lot  safer and they seem to be enjoying the challenge of coming  up with new programs to work on. Matt & Amy (the ones with the bunny and the cat - not the  ones with the kid and a half) have settled into life in a  foreign country (while at the same time living in Canada). They are learning to put up with and being totally  frustrated by some Quebecers' rudeness and disdain  for English speaking people, worse, American English  speakers. But, I'll let Matt explain all that in his own  letter or at the reunion. ALRIGHT!!!! Now that's more like it!!! I came home from  work and was VERY EXCITED to see the new responses and I  simply LOVE the idea of the 12 families t-shirt design  contest!!! STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTIONS ON PRINTING YOUR FAMILY LOGO!!!

Hey everybody... Once you get your FINAL design that your family ALL agrres  on... DRAW it out on white paper in BLACK magic marker  (fine line) . Then get a light box which consists of a  three sided box made from 1x2 inch sides and luon (thin)  wood for the bottom and plexiglass for the top...you then  slide a flourescent light into the box and then pull your T- shirt over the box with your logo in a plastic coated cover  sheet ( like in school) to protect it. Then go to Frank's  Nursery or Michael's craft supply and get BLACK T-shirt  paint in the fine tipped bottles... Then proceed carefully  to draw out your design and DRY it with a hair dryer before  pulling it off the box  or let it sit overnight...Once it  is dry you can fill in your design with colors being  careful to dry each color before going to the next color... note from lil nancy: first off, sounds like it should be go... sounds unanimous  (sp?) - who doesn't love a little competition and with so  many responses to the idea, I think it will come out GRAND!! Mary.. are you setting boundaries????  does it have to be  made with paint - how about t-shirt transfers - getting  your logo drawn out in full color and take it to a print  shop and make transfers out them, iron on - wa - la??? or perhaps combine both... iron on then paint an outline  around the logo for that 3-D look - I think the  possibilities are endless. RETIREMENT 2001

Dearest Family, I have waited a few weeks to type this letter, just in case  it did not happen. As of February 23, 2001, I will be  retired from General Motors. That is exactly to the day, 30  years since I first walked through the door. As some of you  know, I wasn't supposed to retire until June, but this  incredible offer came up for an early retirement and I made  the cut!! Gm was offering anyone who could retire, a 16  month layoff (with 40 hours pay) and then we would actually  retire in July of 2002. They offered 300 slots for this due  to the elimination of our third shift and I was #186!!!!!! My Jim missed it by 32 people :( but he is very happy for  me, plus he will be able to come home to a much happier  wife. What a blessing!!!
