StartTLS

StartTLS (Transport Layer Security) allows for the encryption of username and passwords for customers that are using SMTP authentication (SMTP AUTH) or POP3 for sending and receiving mail.

Outgoing Mail

Sonic.net outgoing mail servers support the StartTLS protocol.

SMTP AUTH is a configurable option in your mail software settings that sends your email username and password before transmitting outgoing mail. StartTLS also has the advantage of encrypting mail while in transit to our servers and from our servers to remote SMTP servers that also support StartTLS.

On most email programs you can set up SMTP AUTH on the same screen as the outgoing mail server name. For instructions on accessing the mail settings for your email program please see our Email Clients listing.

Incoming Mail

Beginning August 23rd, 2003, Sonic.net incoming mail servers will support StartTLS as well as alternate port SSL for all POP3 transactions. For instructions on accessing the mail settings for your email program please see our Email Clients listing. Please refrain from enabling "Secure Password Authentication" in Microsoft email clients (Outlook Express, Outlook, and Entourage), as this is a separate protocol that does not function on our servers.
