Configuring Windows 2000 and Windows XP to Dial Alternate Access Numbers

If you are using Windows 2000 or Windows XP, you may find it helpful to add one or more alternate dialup numbers to your computer's dialup configuration. Adding an alternate number will allow your computer to automatically try a second number in the instance that the first number fails.

To find a list of primary and backup dialup numbers, please visit http://www.sonic.net/cgi-bin/pops.pl

Use the following instructions to configure your computer to use alternate dialup access numbers:

Step 1
Windows 2000 users
- Click on the Start menu, then on Settings, Network and Dial-up Connections, and then right-click on the Sonic.net connection. A sub menu will appear. Click on Properties (shown above).

Windows XP users - Click on the Start menu, then on My Connections, and then click on Show All Connections. Right-click on the Sonic.net connection. A sub menu will appear. Click on Properties (not shown)

Step 2
Click on the Alternates button to the right of the listed access number.

Step 3
Click on the Add button..

Step 4
Type in one of the alternate numbers that you found using the Sonic.net POP finder tool, http://www.sonic.net/cgi-bin/pops.pl

You may also add a comment or description about the access number (optional). Click the OK button.

Step 5
You will now see the alternate number listed below the primary number. Using the arrows on the right, you can change the order in which numbers are dialed. You may add additional alternate access numbers by clicking the Add button and repeating the process starting from Step 4. When finished, click the OK button, and then on the next screen, click the OK button again.

That's it!
