StartTLS in Eudora 5.2
Disabling StartTLS
Frequently Eudora 5.2 will display an error message regarding outgoing mail authentication. This is caused by the StartTLS system on mail.sonic.net that allows for secure outbound mail authentication. We have found that outbound mail is delivered regardless of this message, but if you would like to quickly disable SSL authentication on outgoing mail in Eudora 5.2, use the following steps:
- Click on the "Tools" menu and select "Settings."
- Select the "Sending Mail" category on the left.
- Click on the pulldown menu labeled "Secure Sockets when Sending" and select "Never."
- Click "OK."
You may need to repeat this process on each of your profiles if you are receiving cosmetic error messages about our mail server's SSL key.
Fixing StartTLS
The Eudora 5.2 mechanism for secure outbound authentication does not work properly with mail.sonic.net, while the mechanism for Eudora 5.1 works fine. It is not necessary to downgrade your Eudora in order to take advantange of StartTLS, however.
- Open Eudora 5.2
- Open new new, blank message
- Copy the following text and paste it into the body of the otherwise
blank message:
<x-eudora-option:SSLSendVersion=6>
This will appear as a link (underlined, blue text). - Hold down the Alt key on your keyboard, and left-click on the "link."
- You will be presented with a dialogue window. Click "OK" to accept the changes to Eudora's settings.
