Using Auto Configure

Auto Configure enables the modem to automatically detect and configure a valid ATM VC at startup. Auto Configure eliminates the need to have users configure VC values as described in Configuring the ATM Virtual Circuit.

How Auto Configure Works

When enabled, Auto Configure attempts to establish an ADSL connection with the ISP by automatically detecting the VPI/VCI pair used by your ISP.

A valid connection is found when a PPP, EoA, or IPoA interface is found on the ISP's access server. If the initial VPI/VCI values do not detect a valid connection, then Auto detect tries again using the next set of available values. When a successful connection is discovered, that connection is used for the current session and the VPI/VCI values are "remembered" for initial use the next time the modem starts up.

Auto Configure Modes

Auto Configure can be used to establish PPPoE, PPPoA, IPoA-1577 and EoA connections.

Configuring Auto Configure

Follow these steps to configure Auto Configure:

  1. Select the Automatically radio button. The page will change to show the Auto Configure page.
  2. Click the Enable radio button.
  3. Click Save Changes. A page will display briefly to confirm your changes.
  4. Click the Start button. A warning message will display to inform you that the current configuration will be lost. Click OK.

The modem will display a message that auto detection is in progress. If the modem is able to detect the your connection the VPI/VCI and Protocol that your are using will be displayed in the box. To finish configuring your modem you must click on the protocol that is found. The modem will then create the correct interface for you.

Note: If the protocol found is PPPoE or PPPoA when you click on the protocol you will be prompted to enter your username and password for your connection. This is the username and password supplied to you by your ISP and is different than the one you used to log into the Zoom Configuration Manager.

If Auto Configure fails to detect your protocol settings:

You will need to manually configure your modem, However before doing this it is important that you disable Auto Configure by clicking on the disable radio button. If you don’t disable the Auto Configure feature your modem will attempt to auto detect your connection every time you power it on. After disabling Auto Configure be sure to click Save Changes and Write Settings to Flash.

For help on manually establishing your connection see Basic Setup or consult the documentation that came with your modem.
