Configuring Parental Controls

[Go back]

The Parental Control feature enables management users to block Internet access from specified LAN hosts for specified periods.

Follow these steps to block a host from accessing the Internet:

  1. Ensure that either the system time is specified directly using the Set Date and Time button or SNTP is enabled. We recommend using SNTP to set the system time because on some systems when the time is set manually with Set Date and Time it will be cleared if the unit is powered off.
  2. If the Parental Control page is not already displaying, click the Advanced Status button and then click Parental Control in the menu bar.
  3. In the table on the Parental Control page, enter the IP address of the host you want to block from accessing the Internet.

    - OR -

Select the host name (and corresponding MAC address) from the drop-down list.

Host names and MAC addresses will display in the list only when the hosts' IP addresses are distributed from a DHCP server pool configured on the modem (and the host has, in fact, been assigned a host name).
  4. Select the beginning and ending times for the block to be in effect for this host.

The time is specified in the format HH:MM:SS (hour, in military time, followed by minute and second).
  5. Click Add.

The new entry will display in the table.

NOTE: If want your changes to be permanent, be sure to Write Settings to Flash.

When you create a Parental Control, a bridge filter rule is created that to block inbound and outbound Internet traffic to and from the specified host. You can view the rule on the Bridge Filter page (in the Services tab). The bridge filter rule will be in effect only for the time specified and will be deleted at the end of the period.

The parental control rule itself will remain on the system and will be in effect for same time period each subsequent day until you delete the rule.

To delete a rule, click to the right of the rule in the table.
