Questions and Answers about
the Rain Trap System

Q- Don't the tires decompose after a while?

A- No, they are inert and do not leach harmful pollutants into the environment.

Q- Won't the tires cause the ground to be"swampy"?

A- Once the soil within the tires becomes saturated all excess water overflows the tires and percolates down as it would without tires. Tires do not reduce the infiltration rate.

Q- What about the water captured within the tires, won't it become polluted?

A- No, it overflows and flushes away with each good rainfall or heavy irrigation.

Q- Don't the tires work their way out of the ground?

A- Whole tires do because they trap methane gas reducing their specific gravity. Split tires cannot trap gas and are not susceptible to this phenomenon.

Q- What are the actual water and fertilizer savings?

A- It's a broad range between 10 and 60% percent depending on the amount and frequency of rainfall and the type of soil. Maximum savings are found in areas of high rainfall and sandy soil. Fertilizer recycling is in rough proportion to water recycling.

Q- We are building a golf course near a small town. Where will we get a million tires?

A- We can only plant as many tires as are locally available. If we can obtain only 50 to 75 thousand we can install them in only one fairway or only rough areas. Sometimes we contract with local government to clean up an illegal tire dump. Then we look for a nearby golf course, park or sports field development that can benefit from the Rain Trap System.

Q- How do you plant tires in an area with steep slopes and heavy mounding?

A- We don't. These occupy only a small percentage of an average course. We can still plant a huge number of tires in conventional fairways and roughs while avoiding sensitive or problem areas.

Q- Do the tires interfere with irrigation repair and replacement?

A- In addition to turf grass removal and trenching normally required for repair of replacement, it is necessary to remove a few tires that overlay the work area. For repair jobs this might be a few minutes or a few hours extra labor but would not add much to the annual budget. Should it become necessary to replace the complete irrigation system, we will supply specialized equipment to facilitate tire removal for main and lateral lines.
