Antiweb Questionnaire Candidate - Mr. Christian Crumlish
What hardware do you use in HTML production?
486DX2-66,16 RAM, 750ish HD, 15" monitor
What speed connection do you generally work via?
What do you use to write HTML?
notepad.exe
sometimes vi (not too often anymore)
sometimes winword when i want to search and replace
Why?
I usually write raw html. vi is too clunky. notepad can't do text massage.
What graphics programs do you use?
I use paint.exe (a/k/a pbrush.exe), the win applet, mostly
Why?
I like low-tech art, am jealous of my HD space and memory, am intimidated by
the endless possibilities of photoshop etc.
What audio programs do you use?
Vibra SoundStudio, I think is the name, or something like that.
Why?
It came as part of my multimedia pc package, and can edit sound waves, do
conversions etc. it doesn't speak enough file formats though.
What digital video programs to use use?
What tools are you thinking of using?
I'd like a site-management tool that "knows" the relationships between pages.
Why?
to make editing easier.
oh, also, i want to be able to index any web site.
What conversion tools do you rely on heavily?
I use a crappy program called Cview386 to make bitmaps or jpegs into gifs
I don't like doc-to-html conversions (as with Word's Internet Assistant)
Why?
Snagged it off the net a long time ago and never upgraded. never got into
Lview for some reason.
What platforms do you design for?
Why?
The Web is/should be an inclusive medium.
What screen width do you design for?
I try to make sure that pages look good in 640 x 480, but not always.
Why?
I think of it as a lowest-common denominator. Amazing how awful, for
instance, most contempo web pages look on 16-color PCs, of which there are
many out there.
What level of bandwidth do you usually aim to cater to?
At Enterzone, we won't send a sound over 1 meg, but even that's crazy. We
want people on modems to get a tolerable level of service.
Why?
Again, inclusiveness. It's tempting to cater to the digerati, the people at
universities and working at macweek or hotweird or whatever, but that's
lame. on the other hand we try to bridge a spectrum. the makers of some tv
shows in the 50s shot on color film even when the audience was all seeing
black-and-white.
What resources have been most useful to you in regards to:
HTML
The Web, the many references out there. The View->Source concept.
Why?
It's all there. It just takes study and practice. I like the openness. Hope
pages are never hidden. Even Java code is "interpreted," (right Levi?), so
the stream could be saved to a text file and read, right?
Graphics
Why?
Access to Macintoshes and all their wonderful toys
Audio
Why?
Audio has been a bitch. Conversion, bandwidth, quality.
Video
Why?
Cgi-bin Scripting
Why?
I make him do it all. Here, I think the many "free" examples are the key.
