Sonic.net Open Wi-Fi ProjectHelp us bring free wireless Internet to everyone! |
Thank you for your interest in joining the Sonic.net Open Wi-Fi Project! We have been working for some time on municipal network deployments, and today we have downtown networks deployed in Santa Rosa and Petaluma. Sonic.net has created a new free Wi-Fi concept, using small Sonic.net Mesh Wi-Fi repeaters. We are now ready to start building new community-supported Wi-Fi networks everywhere that Sonic.net DSL is available.
How does it work?
When you sign up, we provide a wireless mesh router to you at a subsidized cost, which you connect to your Sonic.net DSL line along with any other devices that you have connected today. It's easy to plug in, and there's no configuration. A Wi-Fi signal is broadcast by the router, and can be repeated by other routers.
Where is it available?
We are accepting sign-ups everywhere that Sonic.net DSL is available. For an idea of our initial Wi-Fi deployment in Santa Rosa, see the Santa Rosa Coverage Map.
What kind of equipment is used?
Our Sonic.net Mesh Wi-Fi routers are about the size of a deck of cards, and don't require any configuration. You just connect the supplied network cable to your DSL connection, then connect the power, and you will have a wireless network available nearly instantly.
How can I join?
Joining the network easy. Simply fill out the Signup Form and we will ship out your equipment so you can set up your own node on the wireless network right away!
