- Bolus swallowed into rumen and reticulum
- Symbiotic prokaryotes and protists digest cellulose
- Cow may regurgitate and rechew cud to increase surface area
- Reswallowed to omasum where water is removed
- Finally the cud is moved to the abomasum where it is digested by the cow’s enzymes
