Well, here it is, the long awaited Master List. Hope you enjoy it. It is close to what I expected. But X-Men? Really? I must say that some of the participants are having problems grasping the concept of "Top Ten Lists" when they put them in alpabetical order or state they are in "no particular order". I believe that since I did not make an issue of this earlier, I was simply excited to actually receive the lists, that I will take this moment to state that next year we will need to have them ranked for your list to be included. This is not meant to be mean or spiteful, just that I have not realized until just now, moments before I post the master list, that I question it's accuracy with alphabetical and "no particular order" being included. Alas, hindsight is always 20/20. Enjoy!

Just kidding. I wish I have seen that movie. It looks so good! Anyway, here are my real Top Ten's as it stands at the moment... I don't know what the official verdict on Snatch is, but I'm putting it on my list. The top 4 are solid, the order of the middle starts to get a little iffy. 8-10 is filler.

The only critic that (1) I know by name and sight, (2) I usually agree with, is Roger Ebert. I have included a link to the site that has his best/worst fims of 2000. It has some cool features, an archive of the best/worst films from 1986 to 2000, but beware, Gene's picks are there too from 1998 back. Then, Ebert with one of my personal film director idols, Scorcesse pick their top 10 movies of the 90's. I was in for a shock when I saw Eyes Wide Shut was on Scoresse's at number 4. In my humble opinion, that movie had so much potential, especially since Kubrick is another of my director idols, but man, I did not like it, and can not bring myself to watch it again to see if it gets better with age. So check it out. --Cathrine

Here are two links you can follow to see what various groups think are the best movies of the year. Groups like The National Society of Film Critics and The Toronto Film Critics Associations. I believe the first link has a tally of movies and how many "societies" have named them "Best Movie of 2000.

And now, James Woodward's long awaited list!
If you'll forgive the fact that I was a catalyst for this whole thing but still managed to be, possibly, the last to submit, I'll get on with it. At the risk of paraphrasing our first submitter (a good 2 months ahead of me) I'll say that maybe 2000 wasn't necessarily short of good movies, it was just that the good movies were a lot harder to find. Hollywood and the major indy studios came up lacking, and it didn't help that they stockpiled a lot of good stuff in the last week of the year (Come on, Miramax. The best you could do was Chocolat? It must have cost the Weinsteins a lot more than they usually pay for their perennial Oscar nomination). I suspect a lot of gems were hidden in the small market: foreign films, documentaries and smaller independents. Well, here goes...
1. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
2. Requiem for a Dream
3. Goya in Bordeaux
4. Traffic
5.X-Men
6. A Time for Drunken Horses
7. Pitch Black
8. State and Main
9. You Can Count on Me
10. George Washington
Honorable mention to... Jackie Chan, who came out with 2 cool films this year: Shanghai Noon, definitely his best American-made film to date, & Legend of Drunken Master (which would definitely have placed on my main list were it not a severely truncated [by 106 min.!] dubbed version of 1994's "Drunken Master 2"); Shadow of the Vampire; Quills ('cause it reminded me of a '60's Hammer movie); The Game of Death ('cause it reminded me of a '60's Roger Corman movie, maybe because it was a new Roger Corman movie); Best in Show; Timecode (not the greatest movie, but you gotta give Mike Figgis props for just pulling it off); Not One Less; O Brother, Where Art Thou.
Well I would like to take this moment and thank the staff at DD for letting me take my sweet ass time with my list. Here it is in all it's splendor:
1-Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
2-Nurse Betty
3-X-Men
4-The Emperor's New Groove
5-Hi-Fidelity
6-M I 2
7- Romeo Must Die
8-Saving Grace
9-Gladiator
10-Little Orphan Boy
**Disclaimer**
I must admit that I don't think that I even went to ten movies last year and my list isn't in any particular order.
Bring on the Oscars!
Kirsten
