This program is geared toward the general public. Half the talk will be basic information on dragonflies and how freshwater habitat has changed in California. The other half will discuss some initial findings from Joan’s research on changes in dragonfly communities in California and Nevada.

If the day is warm, the group will see such wonderful creatures as the blue eyed darner, pacific forktail, western pondhawk and the cardinal meadowhawk! Learn the difference between dragonflies and damselflies, where to go see them, and how to identify individual species. Find out why dragonflies are the Next Big Thing!! Easy walking. Messengers of Summer: Sonoma County's Dazzling Dragonflies
Workshop with dragonfly expert and author, Kathy Biggs
Friday, June 21, 9am-3:30pm
Location: Heron Hall, Laguna Environmental Center, 900 Sanford Road, Santa Rosa, CA 95401
$55 ($45 for Laguna Foundation members). Pre-registration required.

Welcome the summer solstice with this delightful workshop about dragonflies, the "messengers of summer and heralds of the sun" (as poet and zoologist H. Lons calls them).

Join Kathy Biggs for a morning presentation in Heron Hall, lunch by the dragonfly-rich pond at the Laguna Environmental Center, followed by fun-filled time in the field.

Kathy will share the biology, life cycle, and ecology of Odonata (the family to which dragonflies and damselflies belong).

Identification marks for the most common species in Sonoma County will be introduced.

 The afternoon field trip will be an opportunity to practice identification skills and to make sense of the unusual and fascinating behaviors of dragonflies.

Bring your own sack lunch. Coffee, tea and snacks will be provided.
Rain/fog cancels only outdoor portion of program – video instead!

Bring a lunch to eat while in the field &/or being driven to the Preserve's ponds
The Biggs' field guides and coloring books will be offered at a discounted price at the workshop.

Madrone Audubon's Mayacamas Hike - Dragonflies

We will help you find and identify the dragonflies along Pine Flat Road and through the Mayacamas Sanctuary.
Behavior and biology will be explained. We'll visit seeps, springs, ponds, creeks and end at the Russian River.
Each habitat should present us with a different Odonata (Dragonflies and Damselflies) fauna.
Close focus binoculars are best. A ten-power or higher hand lens would be helpful.
Please wear shoes and clothes that can get wet. Children 12+ OK. Note: any rain cancels this easy hike.

Dragonflies of the State of Jefferson class

Siskiyou Field Institute, Selma, OR (near Cave Junction, west of Grants Pass)
Day One introduces students to the fascinating world of dragonflies:
their biology, life cycles and the identification marks of the Skimmers, Darners & Pond Damsels.
Day Two introduces species of dragonflies not commonly found on lowland ponds and lakes, including the Emeralds, Clubtails, Petaltail, Spiketail, Cruiser and the Spreadwing and Broad-winged Damselflies. The late morning will be spent visiting nearby streams and rivers, and in the afternoon we will carpool to a high mountain lake.

2013 CalOdes/DSA California/Arizona Dragonfly Blitz

Imperial Wetlands, Imperial County, CA and Colorado RV, CA/Yuma, AZ

Every year, the California Dragonfly group picks one of the most under-surveyed counties/counties with uncommon species &/or potential for new state record and conducts a Blitz there.

 Sure to be a fun & informative, and  there will be some new friends to be made. 

 The focus will be to document species presence of all Odes (Dragonflies and Damselflies) using cameras and insect nets.  Beginners welcome.
  Bob Miller is acting as the "local host" of the Imperial/Yuma Dragonfly Blitz- for more information you can contact either

This event will probably involve staying in a motel.
