WHAT CAN WE DO?

By

John A. Bird

What can we do?

When hate is strong enough

To knock down buildings

What can we do?

When God is implicated

As an accomplice to murder

What can we do?

When the dirt beneath our feet

Is worth our neighbor's blood

What can we do?

When hatred brings grief counselors

To day care centers

What can we do?

When schoolyards

Become kill zones

What can we do?

When watching the instant replay

Of horror beyond our grasp

What can we do?

When munitions

Is a growth industry

What can we do?

When Matthew Shepard dies

For the crime of being gay

What can we do?

When James Byrd dies

For the crime of being black

What can we do?

When the inhumanity in others

Eats away at our own

What can we do?

When our only hope is love

Will we have the courage to try?

If love can change the world

And we can love

What can we do?
