The Confederate Coxswain
"A CONFEDERATE COXSWAIN" (1969) - This Civil War epic gave Chuck the role of a
lifetime. He plays a "Mata Hari" from the deep south - a confederate soldier
caught in an embarassing position with a young private in the barracks shower.
Chuck is given a choice - either face court martial or become a spy and
infiltrate the General staff of the Union army. Chuck chooses to become a spy
for the south, and he submits to the whims of the Union generals. Risking
exposure at every turn, Chuck finally encounters General Ullyses S. Grant in a
searingly sordid scene. This film won the Best Picture Oscar and was a huge hit
in the southern states.
