Rep. Tom DeLay

"The Price of Freedom"

RLR: Today we're speaking with House Majority Whip Tom DeLay. Let's get right to the issue. You've been under fire from the liberals for your fund raising abilities. How do you respond to that?

TD: Bob, this attack on me is part of a massive assault by the liberals and their comrades in the media upon the First Amendment to the Constitution. When they attack me, they attack all that is decent and good about America.

RLR: You're speaking of course of the proponents of campaign finance reform. Have you had a chance to read my paper, Campaign Reform = Commie Conspiracy?

TD: Yes, I have, and it's the same thing I've been saying for years. The liberals will do anything to prevent the flow of capital into the electoral process. See, it's not an issue of whether your Congressman is on the take, of whether votes are being bought and sold…that's not in question here. The issue is that the First Amendment guarantees freedom of speech, and as the saying goes, "Money talks". As my esteemed colleague Sen. McConnell put it, "You should have a say, and as loud a say as you can muster".

RLR: You have stated many times that you support the repeal of all limits on campaign contributions.

TD: I believe in a free market society…whatever the market will bear.

RLR: You have also taken a lot of heat about the fact that your brother has become a prominent Washington lobbyist, and that many critics attribute his success to your help.

TD: Once again, Bob, this is nothing but a leftist plot to undermine our fundamental family values. As you know, I have always been a supporter of a strong, supportive family…and if I help my brother it only increases the value of our family. And furthermore, as an American, I am offended by the liberal media's portrayal of the profession of lobbyist as being unseemly or dishonest. This assertion denigrates those noble and patriotic liaisons of the private sector. Some of the greatest moments in our nation's history have come when government and the private sector work together toward a common goal.

RLR: Such as Project Relief, which brought representatives of industry into the Capitol to help rewrite heath and safety regulations.

TD: I am proud to be associated with that historic coalition of organizations who represent the forces of capitalism in their struggle against excessive government taxation and regulation.

RLR: And you would define "excessive" as?

TD: Any. These leftist imposed restrictions such as corporate taxation, OSHA regulations, the minimum wage, and environmental restrictions have no place in a free-market society.

RLR: We all applaud your efforts in this area. You have been especially vigilant against the environmental extremists who threaten our way of life.

TD: The EPA has become the gestapo of government, inventing fake crises such as global warming, acid rain, and endangered species as an excuse to deny us our God-given Constitutional right to do with this planet as we see fit. That's why we're working so hard to defeat the forces of big labor and the radical left and restore moral leadership to the nation.

RLR: Let's pray that everyone gets off their wallets and supports this noble cause.

TD: Amen!
