the Species Survival Commission of IUCN - The World Conservation Union, which is based in
Switzerland. Its function is to provide IUCN, CITES (Convention on International Trade in
Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora), governmental and non-governmental
Organisations with advice on all matters concerning wild cats, including their status in
nature; the threats they face and the conservation requirements; biology and natural
history. Members provide data for the World Conservation Monitoring Centre in Cambridge,
UK, which is used to compile the Red List of Threatened Animals."

Mission statement: "The International Society for Endangered Cats, Inc. (ISEC) is a

throughout the world. Most species of wild cats are threatened or endangered in all or
parts of their native ranges and, unless action is taken in the near future, many will be

Der Luchs ist die einzige lebende Katzenart, die sowohl in Eurasien als auch in
Nordamerika vorkommt, vermutlich auch, weil er die älteste der Wildkatzenarten ist, die
zur Zeit noch auf der Erde leben.
Diese Seiten, wie die der Cat
Specialist Group HomePage in Norwegen beheimatet, wurden ursprünglich eingerichtet,
um eine Kampagne gegen die Bejagung des Luchses in Norwegen zu starten. Noch heute gibt es
eine Reihe politischer Seiten, ein Teil davon auf Norwegisch. Die meisten Seiten sind
jedoch auf Englisch verfügbar.
Die World Lynx-Seiten bieten bezüglich Luchse die meisten auf dem Web vorfindlichen
Informationen an, und zwar hinsichtlich des Europäischen Luchses und seiner Unterarten,
des Spanischen und Sibirischen Luchses, des Kanadaluchses und des Rotluchses. Sie sind der
Einstieg für alle, die sich beruflich als Zoologen oder ernsthaft mit Luchsen
beschäftigen wollen.

Ausführliche Informationen auf einer ausschließlich dem Geparden (engl. cheetah)
gewidmeten Site. So erfährt man, daß es Geparden schon lange gab, bevor die ersten
Großkatzen die Erde betraten. Knochenfunde machte man in allen Erdteilen, außer
Australien und Südamerika.

- Cat Survival Trust Home Page
Der in Großbritannien beheimatete Cat Survival Trust, 1976 gegründet, hat ursprünglich
Wildkatzen in Gefangenschaft gezüchtet und anschließend ausgewildert. Das war teuer (pro
Katze etwa 30.000 £) und nicht effektiv: nur ca. 15% der ausgewilderten Tiere überlebten
und pflanzten sich fort. Daher verfolgt man seit einiger Zeit die Politik, die Katzen
direkt in ihren natürlichen Habitaten zu schützen, mitsamt ihrer Umwelt.

endangered snow leopard and its mountain ecosystem through a balanced approach that
considers the needs of the people and the environment. Since 1981, ISLT has worked on more
than 100 projects with local populations throughout Central Asia in small, creative, and
visible programs to make on-the-ground and long-lasting conservation happen.
The activities of human populations have caused the snow leopard to become endangered.
Clearing of forests for cropland and burgeoning herds of domestic livestock have crowded
the snow leopard, along with their native wild prey, out of much of their former range.
Snow leopards are killed illegally in retaliation for livestock raiding, but a far more
serious threat is the growing market for the bones, skin and other organs of rare animals
for use in Asian traditional medicine."

Das Projekt ist der Versuch, die eigentlich ausgestorbene Unterart des Pumas durch
Kreuzung mit dem Texas-Puma wieder lebensfähig zu machen. Durch Zufuhr "frischen
Bluts", so die Überlegung, aus Texas soll aus der Kleinstpopulation in Florida
wieder eine Unterart werden. Im Grunde ist diese Politik nichts anderes, als was in Zoos
mit Erhaltungszuchtprogrammen gemacht wird: Die Examplare einer Gattung werden auf
verschiedene Zoos verteilt, einer übernimmt das Zuchtbuch, und dann wird getauscht, damit
die Gene aller Tiere gemischt werden.

Offizielle Site des US-Staats Florida. Was Wildkatzen angeht, sind die Seiten über den
Florida-Puma das Ausführlichste in seiner Art im Internet. Wer z.B. endlich mal
minutenlang einer Pumafrau zuhören möchte, die in Hitze ist und sich im Umkreis von
einigen Kilometern bemerkbar machen will: hier gibt es Real Player-Files mit
entsprechenden Aufnahmen. Der Leser erfährt auch einiges über die sehr
unterschiedliche Haltung von Natives (nordamerikanischen Ureinwohnern) und weißen
Europäern zu Pumas.
Wie sich die unterschiedliche Haltung auch in den unterschiedlichen Namensgebungen
niederschlägt siehe hier. Da Pumas fast überall in Amerika vorkommen (außer im hohen
Norden), gibt es auch eine entsprechend große Namensvielfalt.

Mission statement: "Mountain View Farms Conservation and Breeding Centre is
committed to the participation in conserving all species of the world's
small and
endangered wild cats. There is an urgent need to focus global attention upon the small
wild cats of the world. Despite the fact that small wild species of cats are highly
beneficial in controlling populations of pests that plague the world's food crops and
therefore is a friend and helper of human populations, this is a category of animals that
has been primarily ignored by governments, scientists and zoological institutions for two
reasons: First, little is known of their natural history in the wild because they are not
highly visible nor are they a direct threat to man; and second, there is a general belief
that small felids are difficult to reproduce in captive environments.
Conservationists and scientists
have realized the importance of establishing Species Survival Plans for long-range
survival of endangered animals, and of the need for such efforts to be implemented to save
small species of carnivores such as the diminutive cat species of the world. Mountain View
Farms has taken an active part in furthering these goals through sharing knowledge and
experience gained while working directly with these animals over the past 10 years.
There is little time. The survival of small wild cat
species is critical to the balance of the remaining ecosystems in which they exist, and
they are disappearing at an alarming rate. Combined with the technology transfer,
development of small cat breeding/conservation centers must be established in the
countries where cats originate. Breeding groups of animals must be established in other
institutions and breeding centers around the world as a hedge against species extinction.
