Warm Thoughts....brrrrrrrr

Tuesday afternoon found him in the new mall about 10 miles from where he lived. He'd made it to and from the shoe store without too much trouble though getting his wallet out of his pants pocket was, again, frustrating. He had the people at the shoe store lace them up and slip them on his feet since the PD had made such efforts near impossible. He was excited about his purchase and the afternoon ahead.

He realized after spending too much time bemoaning his situation, that it would be good to get away for awhile. Close friends had told him of a fabulous place and the thought of doing something other than facing his daily challenges kept him moving through the paces of getting ready.

The traffic cooperated and he pulled up in the driveway of his small house. His medicine was working somewhat as he thought to himself "Gotta remember to lie down before I go anywhere". His wife had died years back so he would have to make this trip all by himself. As he eased back on the bed, his weariness took over and he fell back with a thud. His medicine was across the room on the shelf but he just wanted to "rest his eyes".

PD had turned him from a "happy man in his mid-50's" to a "bitter man in his late 50's". So many things that had brought him joy were now unattainable in his present state. So many friends had left his daily life and become distant memories instead.

He reached over and was just able to pull the blanket on top of him for warmth. He thought to himself, "Maybe I should try to get up and get my medicine before I go to sleep" but the warmth of the blanket and the trip to the shoe store had done him in for the day and he drifted off to sleep.

Later that evening, he awoke to realize he had pulled the blanket over his head during the night and started to panic but no one was there to hear his cries since he lived alone. He didn't have much energy at all as he whimpered in the darkness, struggling to get out from under the blanket that seemed to press down on him like a spectre.

Days later, his daughter, concerned that someone or something had interrupted her Dad's vacation, used her key to let herself in the house. As she entered her father's bedroom, the first thing she saw was a new pair of tennis shoes poking out from underneath a purple blanket. "Oh, Dad" she said lovingly, gave his feet a playful push with her hand, as she sat on the edge of the bed to tell him all about her day.
